"Life is fragile, yet incredibly resilient."

Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hung - Secretary of the Youth Union, Head of the Blood Donation Club , Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital.

As a doctor directly treating patients at Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, I deeply understand the dual significance of my role: both as a healer and as someone who contributes to giving hope through blood donation. For us, blood is not just a special medicine, but an irreplaceable source of life, especially essential for pediatric patients and pregnant women in emergency situations, surgeries, or treatments for blood-related diseases.

Every drop of blood is not only an act of compassion but also an opportunity to continue writing stories of life, love, and hope.

Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hung

The blood donation movement at Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital has always received special attention and active support from the leadership and all medical staff. We regularly organize internal blood donation drives and actively coordinate with the regional Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center to call on the community, patients' families, and organizations to join hands. In particular, the Hospital's Living Blood Bank Club is always ready to provide blood for critical emergency cases.

Throughout my career as a doctor, I have witnessed many touching stories. I vividly remember the case of a woman who suffered postpartum hemorrhage on New Year's Eve 2017. The particularly challenging aspect was that the woman had the rare AB blood type, and the blood bank at the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center was depleted. Under the urgent direction of the hospital leadership, the Living Blood Bank Club was activated. Immediately, seven medical staff members arrived promptly (including two who were at home but came to assist), and we had enough blood to save the patient.

Seeing the patient's family burst with joy, I knew I had truly contributed to a miracle. That experience reinforced my belief in the meaning of blood donation: Every drop of blood is not only an act of compassion but also an opportunity to continue writing stories of life, love, and hope. It showed me that life is fragile yet incredibly strong when there is sharing and compassion from the community.

"What I did was incredibly small."

Mr. Nguyen Truong Son - Nghe An Water Supply Joint Stock Company, one of the two representatives from Nghe An province participating in the "National Outstanding Voluntary Blood Donor Award Ceremony 2025".

I donated blood for the first time when I was a student, after assisting at a blood donation program. After that experience, deeply understanding the importance of blood, I decided to continue this activity until now.

During my time participating in blood donation and being a member of the Thanh Vinh Living Blood Bank, I witnessed many touching stories and had many memorable experiences. Once, upon receiving information about an emergency requiring rare blood types, members in Nghe An province split up to transport blood donors 40-50km from Vinh City under the scorching sun. Whether it was midnight, rain, wind, or freezing cold, if a patient needed blood, everyone was there immediately… Everyone was driven by a spirit of service, giving selflessly and unconditionally. Often, after donating blood, seeing patients in difficult circumstances, we would even give them extra money to help, never accepting thank-you gifts.

At the "National Outstanding Voluntary Blood Donor Award Ceremony 2025," I met people who had donated blood hundreds of times. Some elderly people even suggested raising the age limit for blood donation so they would have more opportunities to give. Meeting such people, I felt that what I do is still very small, and I will continue my journey of giving life to the world.

"The Red Journey" - the meaning of youth.

Nguyen Quynh Trang - a second-year student in the Faculty of Literature and Linguistics Education at Vinh University - is the Head of the Blood Donation Promotion and Mobilization Club - under the Student Union of Vinh University.

Our Blood Donation Awareness and Mobilization Club operates on two main principles: calling for and supporting blood donations at school locations, and seeking assistance when someone urgently needs blood. Whenever there's a blood donation drive, we take turns creating promotional materials, and sometimes we're busy filling out forms, distributing gift bags, and assisting doctors so they can focus on collecting blood and signing forms. When we receive information about someone urgently needing blood, we write posts and share them in the Vinh University Living Blood Bank group to call for help. During peak weeks, we're present at the blood donation site all day. In addition, we also provide free tutoring for child patients at the Nghe An Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center.

As young students, our lives become more beautiful, meaningful, and joyful when we are involved in this journey of giving hope for life.

Student Nguyen Quynh Trang

Since joining the club, witnessing the enthusiasm, love, and willingness to share of the seniors and club members, I have changed and matured a great deal. For us, blood donation is not only a humanitarian act, but also an indispensable part of student life, a vivid expression of compassion and responsibility to the community. Every drop of blood donated not only contributes to saving a life, but also spreads a message of love and sharing in society. It helps us feel happy to contribute a small part to sustaining life. Our student life becomes more beautiful, more meaningful, and happier when we are involved in this journey of giving hope for life.

Nghe An ranks 5th nationwide in the blood donation movement.

Dr. Pham Van Thai, Specialist II - Deputy Director of the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center of Nghe An Province

Blood is an extremely precious product that cannot be artificially produced; it can only come from compassionate hearts. Blood donation is a noble act, demonstrating compassion and responsibility towards the community, directly contributing to the treatment and preservation of life for millions of patients.

The voluntary blood donation movement in Nghe An has achieved many positive results, gradually spreading widely and becoming a beautiful cultural feature, demonstrating the humanitarian spirit and mutual support characteristic of the people. This is most clearly demonstrated by Nghe An currently ranking 5th nationwide in blood donation.

However, despite the favorable human resources, many difficulties remain. The biggest challenge currently is in the area of public awareness campaigns and mobilization. A segment of the population still does not fully understand the importance of voluntary blood donation. Another major challenge is the shortage of blood during special occasions such as summer and Tet (Lunar New Year), when people are busy and students – the main blood donation force of clubs – are on vacation. Currently, the situation is even more serious as the blood reserves at the Nghe An Blood Transfusion Center are at an alarming level. The main reason stems from the ongoing restructuring and reorganization of the organizational structure and personnel when implementing the two-tiered local government model, leading to many units not effectively carrying out blood donation campaigns as usual.

Currently, the Nghe An Blood Transfusion and Hematology Center supplies blood to 43 medical facilities in Nghe An and parts of Ha Tinh province. In the future, as Vinh City is designated as a high-quality medical center in the North Central region according to Resolution 39-NQ/TW dated July 18, 2023, of the Politburo , hospitals will increasingly perform organ transplants and advanced medical procedures, leading to a further increase in the demand for blood and blood products. Currently, the Center only meets about 70-80% of the demand for blood and blood products for patients.

I believe that those who have been involved in the field of Hematology for a long time are very dedicated and willing to serve the community. To ensure a continuous blood supply, the Nghe An Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center always has blood donors on duty 24/7 at the Center and at the blood donation point at Vinh University. They often have to leave at 3 AM today, receive blood, and work all night until 3 AM the next day to ensure blood quality. They have no days off, not even Saturdays or Sundays; on those days, they even have to work harder. Such hardship, if not for a sense of responsibility to the community and the dedication of those in this profession, would be impossible to pursue.
