The Interior Ministry said on December 3 that attackers armed with explosives and other weapons entered the mine on Saturday night and took four people hostage. According to the Peruvian daily El Comerico , the incident occurred in a sinkhole where the mining company was operating.
The Interior Ministry said the attackers stormed the mine, “violently confronting the company’s internal security personnel and taking four people hostage.” Police “brought the situation under control” after the raid with the support of special forces.
In a statement, the ministry said the incident occurred at 10 a.m. (local time), police "have brought the situation under control," seven individuals have been arrested, and weapons have been seized.
The Peruvian Interior Ministry also stated that it had dispatched special forces to the scene to assist local police. According to the ministry, the intruders broke into the mine, used explosives, "clashed violently with the company's security forces, and took four people hostage."
The attack occurred a year after the impeachment and arrest of former President Pedro Castillo, which triggered months of devastating protests that disrupted operations at Peru's mines.
Months of deadly protests followed, disrupting mining operations and creating an environment conducive to illegal activities, including murder, extortion, and violent land grabbing. Peru is the world's second-largest copper producer and a significant producer of gold and silver.
