The family of Mr. Trieu Minh Thanh, in Quyen A2 village, is one of the pioneering households to introduce purple glutinous corn cultivation to the area, thereby contributing to increasing the family's income. Mr. Thanh said: For about the past 3 years, the family has maintained the cultivation of 1.3 acres of purple glutinous corn. Starting in January, the family begins planting and implements staggered planting. Currently, the early-planted areas are already yielding harvests. Each year, the family mainly sells corn kernels (shelled and dried), with a yield of about 5 tons. With a selling price ranging from 25,000 to 30,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, the family earns nearly 100 million VND per year.
According to Ms. Bui Thi Huyen, Party Secretary and Head of Quyen A2 village, it's not just Mr. Thanh's family; out of 127 households in the village, about 100 cultivate purple glutinous corn on an area of over 10 hectares. In recent years, purple glutinous corn has become a crop that provides a stable source of income for many households in the village.
Along with Quyen A2 village, many villages in Trang Dinh commune are now promoting the cultivation of purple glutinous corn, contributing to the enhancement of agricultural production value. According to statistics, the entire commune has approximately 100 hectares of purple glutinous corn. The corn is sown by farmers in January and harvested around May. For areas planted early in January, some households can plant the next crop in June after harvesting. With suitable climate and soil conditions, the purple glutinous corn in the commune grows well and is less susceptible to pests and diseases. Farmers usually sell the corn by the cob, with prices ranging from 2,500 to 3,000 VND per cob, or separate the kernels to sell at prices ranging from 25,000 to 30,000 VND per kilogram.
Ms. Nong Thi Kim, from Quyen A1 village, shared: "Last year, my family planted 2 sao (approximately 2,000 square meters) of purple glutinous corn. From selling the cobs and kernels, my family earned 7 million VND. This year, my family expanded the area to 1.2 acres. Currently, the purple glutinous corn is starting to be harvested. Since the beginning of the season, my family has sold more than 1,000 cobs, with prices ranging from 2,500 to 3,000 VND per cob. We plan to sell the remaining corn kernels to improve economic efficiency. I find purple glutinous corn very easy to grow and care for, the plants are also less susceptible to pests and diseases, and especially the market is stable, with traders coming directly to our house to buy, so the farmers feel secure."
To ensure the stable growth of purple glutinous corn, the Trang Dinh commune government has recently intensified its efforts to educate and guide farmers on applying proper techniques for crop care and pest control. Professional staff regularly inspect the fields, advising farmers to proactively monitor pest and disease situations for timely intervention. As a result, the corn crop is developing steadily. According to local calculations, farmers earn an average profit of 2.4 - 3 million VND per sao (approximately 1000 square meters) from growing purple glutinous corn, which is 3-4 times higher than growing rice.
Currently, the consumption of purple glutinous corn is quite favorable for local people. In the commune and neighboring communes, several households have processed products from purple glutinous corn such as corn tea, popcorn, etc., contributing to increasing the value of the product.
Mr. Ngo Van Tung, Deputy Head of the Economic Department of Trang Dinh commune, said: "In recent years, the conversion to growing purple glutinous corn in the commune has brought clear economic benefits to the people, contributing to increasing income and gradually forming a distinctive local product. In the coming time, the People's Committee of the commune will continue to review and plan suitable planting areas; coordinate with specialized agencies to organize training and guide people to apply science and technology to production to improve productivity and product quality. At the same time, we will guide people to develop and diversify processed products from purple glutinous corn, aiming to develop them into OCOP products, contributing to increasing value and expanding the market for the product."
With its economic benefits, purple glutinous corn is gradually proving to be a suitable crop, contributing to increased income for people in Trang Dinh commune. To ensure the sustainable development of purple glutinous corn and provide a stable and sustainable income for the people, the commune needs to focus on rationally planning the planting areas, strengthening the application of science and technology in production, and promoting diversification of processed products.
