Focus on caring for grapefruit trees during the young fruit stage.

Entering the young fruit stage – the "golden" period that determines the success or failure of the entire crop – more than 13 hectares of pomelo trees in Binh Thuan commune are being meticulously cared for by farmers in the hope of a bountiful harvest with good prices. To support farmers in key growing areas such as Dong Quan and Kien Xuong, the commune government has proactively implemented comprehensive technical solutions, working closely with farmers in every stage of cultivation.

Mr. Vu Tien De, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Binh Thuan commune, said: "We have directed specialized agencies to organize in-depth technical training, advanced techniques, and the application of new technical solutions in the direction of high-tech agriculture and organic farming; guiding people on techniques to prune deformed fruits, diseased fruits, or overly dense fruit clusters. The goal is to concentrate nutrients on nourishing healthy, uniform fruits."

Currently, the commune has directed agricultural officials to closely monitor the area, assess the pest situation on fruit trees, and promptly inform and guide farmers on measures to control common pests and diseases that attack young fruit during this period. We always maintain that the government should not only issue documents but also be a partner with farmers, bringing techniques from paper into practical application in orchards, ensuring the best possible results for this year's pomelo harvest.

Mr. Nguyen Ba Vu's orchard in Dong Quan village, Binh Thuan commune, has 300 green pomelo trees that are already bearing fruit. Thanks to proper care techniques, the orchard is developing quite well, with stable yields. After deducting expenses such as fertilizers, pesticides, and labor, Mr. Vu's family expects to earn a profit of approximately 140 million VND in 2025. Leading us through the lush green orchard, where we had to constantly avoid clusters of plump, round, young pomelos, Mr. Nguyen Ba Vu shared: "During the young fruit stage, we focus on careful care to minimize fruit drop. We regularly monitor the orchard, water adequately, and fertilize appropriately so that the trees have enough nutrients to nourish the fruit. In addition, we also prune small and diseased fruits so that the trees can concentrate on nourishing healthy fruits. At the same time, we proactively control pests and diseases using appropriate pesticides according to the instructions of technical staff to ensure the yield and quality of the pomelos."

Visiting the orchard of Ms. Tran Thi Tuyet in Kien Xuong village, Binh Thuan commune, we arrived just as she was clearing the irrigation ditches running through her family's approximately 400 grapefruit trees. Ms. Tuyet said: "Besides pruning young fruit and fertilizing, ensuring adequate water for the grapefruit trees during the young fruit stage is also crucial for their healthy growth. My family has invested in a water reservoir right next to the orchard for convenient watering. In addition to the automatic irrigation system, we have also built a system of irrigation ditches around the orchard to provide extra water to the trees during prolonged periods of hot weather, like the end of May. My family hopes that relevant authorities will continue to provide technical support for grapefruit tree care; and increase information on pest and disease situations and market prices so that farmers can be proactive in production."

During the young fruit stage, grapefruit trees are susceptible to various pests and diseases. The Binh Thuan Commune General Service Center regularly dispatches technical staff to the orchards to conduct on-site inspections with grapefruit growers. This allows for early detection and timely, targeted pest and disease control, preventing the spread of pests and diseases, which is a crucial factor determining the yield and quality of the grapefruit. Mr. Lo Van Hoang, Acting Director of the Binh Thuan Commune General Service Center, stated: "At this time, the General Service Center proactively provides support to grapefruit-growing households; guiding farmers on techniques for caring for grapefruit trees during the young fruit stage, including fertilizing to supplement nutrients such as minerals, nutrients, and trace elements, and ensuring watering is appropriate for the weather conditions. During the young fruit stage, we recommend that grapefruit growers maintain stable soil moisture levels between 70-80%." In addition, people are instructed to remove small, misshapen, or insect-damaged fruits so that the tree can focus its energy on nourishing the remaining fruits.

The proactive approach of grapefruit growers and the support of technical staff in caring for and preventing diseases in grapefruit trees during the young fruit stage are effective measures that help grapefruit trees and fruits grow and develop well, resulting in a bountiful grapefruit harvest.
