The iPhone 17 Pro Max recently became the focus of attention on tech forums when a user attached a series of M.2 SSD heatsinks to the back of the device. This unusual build makes Apple's high-end smartphone look very bulky, but it delivers surprisingly effective heat dissipation and maintains performance.
According to Reddit user TK-Tronix, the purpose of this build was simply "because it's possible." However, test results show a significant difference. In the 3DMark graphics test, the iPhone 17 Pro Max, after having an SSD heatsink attached, was able to maintain stable performance above 90% throughout 20 consecutive cycles, a rare feat for smartphones.
Apple previously incorporated vapor chamber cooling technology into the iPhone 17 Pro series to maximize the power of the A19 Pro chip. This solution, already familiar from Android flagships, transfers heat from the processor (SoC) to the aluminum frame for dissipation. However, the frame itself still needs time to cool down, limiting the ability to maintain high performance for extended periods.
The addition of active heat dissipation on the back improves the device's overall heat dissipation, reducing heat buildup during continuous operation. While this offers performance benefits, the design almost entirely sacrifices aesthetics. The once sleek iPhone now becomes a clunky machine, a complete contrast to Apple's streamlined design philosophy.
According to analysts, this type of heat dissipation is achievable in many high-end Android phones, especially those with unibody metal frames combined with vapor chambers. However, most current smartphones still use a two-sided glass design, limiting heat dissipation. In the case of the iPhone 17 Pro Max, if the heat sink were directly attached to the camera module, the cooling effect could be significantly better.
Although unlikely to be applied in practice, this concept has impressed the tech community. It not only demonstrates the potential for upgrading smartphone cooling systems but also showcases the boundless creativity of users.
