The iPhone 17 Pro Max has just become the center of attention on the technology forum when a user added a series of M.2 SSD heatsinks to the back of the device. This strange design makes Apple's high-end smartphone look very bulky, but it provides surprisingly effective heat dissipation and performance maintenance.
According to a Reddit account named TK-Tronix, the purpose of this build is simply “because it can be done”. However, the test results show a clear difference. In the 3DMark graphics test, the iPhone 17 Pro Max after installing the SSD heatsink can maintain a stable performance at over 90% throughout 20 consecutive loops, a number rarely seen in smartphones.
Apple previously introduced vapor chamber cooling technology to the iPhone 17 Pro line to maximize the power of the A19 Pro chip. This solution, which is already familiar on Android flagships, helps transfer heat from the processor (SoC) to the aluminum frame for dispersion. However, the frame itself still needs time to cool down, so maintaining high performance for a long time is still limited.
The addition of active cooling on the back improves the overall heat dissipation of the device, reducing the buildup of heat during continuous operation. While this design benefits performance, it almost completely sacrifices aesthetics. The once-sleek iPhone is now a clunky machine, completely contrary to Apple's lean design philosophy.
According to analysts, this type of heat dissipation effect can be achieved in many high-end Android phone models, especially those using a monolithic metal frame combined with a vapor chamber. However, most smartphones today still use a double-glass design, limiting the ability to dissipate heat. In the case of the iPhone 17 Pro Max, if the heat sink is attached directly to the camera cluster, the cooling effect can be more obvious.
Although it is difficult to apply in practice, this build still impresses the technology community. It not only demonstrates the potential to upgrade the cooling system on smartphones but also shows the unlimited creativity of users.
