Deeply imbued with camaraderie and affection.

In July, while the whole country commemorates the War Invalids and Martyrs Day on July 27th to remember and pay tribute to the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland, the soldiers of the Da Nang armed forces are still tirelessly traversing forests and mountains with the desire to bring those who have fallen back to their homeland! Without fanfare or glory... a silent journey, imbued with the deep bonds of camaraderie.

A journey of gratitude on every inch of our homeland.

During the wars of national liberation and defense of the Fatherland, Quang Nam province and the former Da Nang city, now the new Da Nang city, were the sites of many battles, both large and small, and suffered many sacrifices and losses.

From 2021 to the present, Da Nang (formerly) has organized 14 survey and search operations with more than 450 man-days of work, collecting 34 remains of martyrs, and handing them over to families and localities for solemn and thoughtful memorial and burial ceremonies.

In the former Quang Nam province, with the motto "no martyr should be forgotten," the Military Command, in coordination with local authorities, veterans, and relatives of martyrs, organized numerous surveys and searches in former fierce battlefields such as Bac Tra My, Nam Giang, and Phuoc Son. From 2021 to June 2025, more than 700 surveys were conducted, collecting and processing nearly 2,500 pieces of information; excavations were carried out at 1,432 suspected grave sites, and 119 remains were recovered, of which the identities of 38 martyrs were confirmed.

"As time passed since the battles, the information provided by veterans and the public about fallen soldiers has decreased due to old age, declining memory, and changes in the original burial sites, resulting in low accuracy."

Furthermore, the former Da Nang City Steering Committee 515 lacked a dedicated team for searching and collecting the remains of fallen soldiers. Therefore, search operations faced difficulties not only in terms of terrain and initial information, but also in identifying artifacts that would determine the identity of the fallen soldiers. The constant rotation and additional duties of the staff significantly impacted the monitoring, direction, and close supervision of the task.

"Da Nang city currently has a very large geographical area, so the work of searching for and collecting the remains of martyrs continues to be given special attention, because this meaningful activity contributes to alleviating the pain of war, fulfilling the heartfelt feelings and aspirations of the relatives and families of martyrs and people and soldiers nationwide," said Colonel Vo Van Tuan, Political Commissar of the Da Nang Military Command.

Technology and teamwork – two breakthrough factors.

Unlike in previous periods, current repatriation efforts are supported by satellite maps, GPS positioning systems, thermal imaging technology, and DNA tracing. The Da Nang Military Command has provided information and images, coordinating with the city's Post Office and local authorities to build an electronic portal on martyrs and their graves, providing information, databases, and location maps of martyrs' graves; martyrs' cemeteries are digitized and managed using a software system.

This facilitates the management and comparison of grave locations and information between the survey database and actual images at martyrs' cemeteries; it also enables relatives of martyrs and the public to access information about martyrs, their graves, and martyrs' cemeteries quickly and accurately.

Major Do Van Toan, a professional soldier and staff member of the Operations and Training Department, Staff Office, Da Nang City Military Command, is an experienced mapmaker who directly participates in surveys and mapping of the remains of fallen soldiers.

Having just finished a survey trip, drenched in sweat from the sweltering July heat, Major Do Van Toan's eyes were still full of enthusiasm. He confided that each trip was arduous, but for him, it was a source of gratitude, a reminder to the younger generation, growing up in peace without hearing the sounds of bombs and bullets, to have the opportunity to appreciate history and the sacrifices of their fathers and grandfathers.

Besides applying technology, raising awareness, fostering responsibility, and mobilizing all segments of the population to participate in providing information and searching for, collecting, and identifying the remains of fallen soldiers plays a crucial role in influencing the effectiveness and progress of the work of collecting the remains of fallen soldiers.

The search and recovery efforts for the remains of fallen soldiers by these task forces are extremely arduous and challenging, involving climbing mountains, wading through streams, and marching deep into the treacherous forests and high peaks – a common occurrence.

But with the hope of finding the remains of fallen soldiers and bringing them back to their homeland, driven by affection, responsibility, gratitude, and appreciation for the preceding generations, the city's armed forces continue their search efforts with the motto "complete the task, search and collect the remains of fallen soldiers wherever they are found," and "as long as there is information about fallen soldiers and their graves, we will continue to organize the search and collection."

The City Veterans Association launched the "Veterans Provide Information, Search for Comrades" movement to rekindle the sacred bonds of camaraderie and fellowship.

Alongside the work of collecting the remains of fallen soldiers, the armed forces in the cities also organized activities such as: "lighting candles in gratitude," "commemorating fallen soldiers," providing medical examinations and gifts to Vietnamese Heroic Mothers and relatives of fallen soldiers; educating young people about traditions through "back to the roots" journeys... July 27th is not only a day to remember, but also a journey connecting the past and the present.

The fragrant incense sticks, the drops of sweat that seep into the earth during each digging and searching... are powerful evidence of the principle of "Drinking water, remember the source."

The armed forces of Da Nang have determined that this is not only a duty and responsibility, but also a command from the heart that motivates officers and soldiers; so that each grave found brings comfort to countless families, and is a continuation of "showing gratitude" from today's generation to honor the heroic sons and daughters of the nation.

The journey to bring them back to their homeland will continue, like a promise that has never ended.
