Coach Benitez was disappointing. |
In an official statement released on May 23, Panathinaikos thanked Benitez and his coaching staff for their professionalism during their time at the club, and wished the 66-year-old strategist success in the future.
The Greek team is currently urgently searching for a new coach with the advice of Franco Baldini, former Technical Director of Tottenham.
Coach Benitez accepted the offer to manage the Athens team last October with a two-and-a-half-year contract and a salary of approximately £4.4 million per season. However, inconsistent results led the Panathinaikos management to decide to terminate the partnership earlier than expected.
Under Benitez, Panathinaikos played 41 matches in all competitions and lost 10. The team finished only fourth in the league, meaning they will participate in the Conference League qualifiers next season instead of securing a place in the Europa League play-offs.
According to Greek media, the 0-2 defeat against arch-rival Olympiacos in the last derby at the Apostolos Nikolaidis stadium in April was seen as a turning point that caused president Giannis Alafouzos to lose faith in Benitez. This was also Panathinaikos' last derby at their historic stadium before the team moved to the Votanikos stadium from the new season.
For Benitez, this marks his fourth departure from a club in just five years, following brief stints at Dalian Professional, Celta Vigo, and Everton. Despite his historic Champions League victory with Liverpool in 2005, Benitez's managerial career has been plagued by setbacks in recent years.
