With 65 blood donations, including 40 platelet donations, technician Bui Thanh Phuc, Department of Diagnostic Imaging, Thanh Hoa General Hospital is one of the active "nuclei" in the voluntary blood donation movement. Mr. Phuc was born in 1992 and started participating in voluntary blood donation in 2011 when he was a first-year student at Thanh Hoa Medical College.
Talking about the opportunity to decide to donate blood when he was just 18 years old, Mr. Phuc said: “I admired my parents many times when they donated blood, so I always told myself to take care of my health and when I reached a certain age, I would definitely participate in blood donation activities. Therefore, entering my first year of university life, in the blood donation program organized by the Provincial Red Cross Society, I expressed my wish and was supported by my parents. For me, donating blood is not only giving but also receiving many things in return, which are health and joy when I contribute to bringing life to patients in need of blood.”
For Phuc, “blood can wait for patients, but patients cannot wait for blood”, so he silently works hard on the blood donation work regardless of day or night, whenever there is information, he arranges his work to donate blood. And since participating in the province’s blood donation activities, he has never turned off his phone but always left it on to receive information about patients who need help with blood sources.
14 years of participating in HMTN activities have left Bui Thanh Phuc with many emotions and unforgettable stories, and June 25, 2025, after he had just finished his shift at the hospital, was one of the memorable memories. At that time, it was 10:30 p.m., after receiving a phone call from a doctor at the Hematology - Blood Transfusion Center (Thanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital) about a patient with glaucoma who needed urgent platelet transfusion, he quickly went to the center to donate platelets until after 2 a.m. before returning home. Because he understood that the patient was in critical condition, if he was just a little bit slower, the patient would be at risk of blindness.
“Although my hand hurt and it took more time than normal blood donation, I felt relieved when I heard that the patient was out of danger. I did this not because I expected the patient to thank me, but because I hope that my small act will attract more people to join in this meaningful activity,” Phuc added.
Sharing the same view of being willing to donate blood, Ms. Trinh Vi Ngoc Anh, receptionist of the Logistics Department, Phuong Thanh Resort, Provincial Police, confided: "As long as I am healthy, I will donate blood to save people. Every time I donate, I feel very proud and happy because I have done a good deed by helping a patient overcome a critical condition." Therefore, from the first time Ngoc Anh donated blood when she was a first-year student at Thanh Hoa University of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2011, up to now, she has donated blood 33 times. In addition to participating herself, she also actively encourages relatives and friends to join the blood donation movement.
To ensure her health and blood quality for the next time, Ngoc Anh always pays attention to a regular lifestyle, exercising and playing sports to improve her health. Whenever she receives information from the hospital or the Thanh Hoa Provincial Blood Donor Support and Propaganda Club, she is always willing to donate blood regardless of difficulties. Talking about unforgettable memories, she still remembers a story that happened a few years ago. When she received information from Thanh Hoa Children's Hospital about a child patient in urgent need of blood, she took a taxi to the hospital to donate blood. However, when she arrived, she was informed that the patient's prognosis was poor, and she returned home with sadness. When she had traveled more than half the distance, she received a phone call from the hospital saying that the patient had many positive changes and was in great need of blood. Without thinking much, she returned, donated blood, and helped the patient fight for his life.
The HMTN stories of Mr. Thanh Phuc and Ms. Ngoc Anh are two of many typical examples in the HMTN movement of the province. For them, when given drops of red blood of love, they do not mind the sun, rain or late night, they are ready to go to HMTN. The noble acts of the "living blood banks" also inspire and unite people to spread good things in life with the spirit of all for the life and health of patients.
