Mr. Tran Thai Binh (Lang Hamlet, Tan Chanh Commune, Can Duoc District) has achieved success with his model of breeding and selling Thai Betta fish.
Although he worked as a construction worker, Mr. Binh had a special passion for Thai Betta fish, a species considered by enthusiasts as "Eastern jewelry." However, at that time, these ornamental fish were expensive, with some costing tens of millions of dong, making them difficult to acquire. Mr. Binh saved up for almost a year before he could "bring home" a pair of Thai Betta fish for nearly 10 million dong.
While raising Thai Betta fish, he noticed a high demand for ornamental Betta fish among the public, so he decided to switch to business. He usually sells online and drives along roads, mainly in crowded areas. However, the price of Thai Betta fish is quite high, not everyone can afford them, especially those with low incomes. Seeing this, he came up with the idea of breeding Thai Betta fish to lower the cost so that more people could access this breed. Through this, he could also earn extra income.
Without hesitation, he discussed it with his family and rented 10 square meters of land in a boarding house in Ho Chi Minh City to breed Thai Betta fish. After successfully breeding and selling Thai Betta fish, he decided to "leave the city and return to the countryside," expanding the breeding area.
Mr. Binh shared: “Before opening my Thai Betta fish breeding farm, I visited and learned from many places about tank design, breeding, fish feed, and market demand, so I didn't rush. After that, I invested in building 50 cement tanks, 30 plastic trays with a capacity of 30 liters each, fish fry, and especially a water filtration system, totaling nearly 200 million VND. To date, I have 30,000 pairs of male and female fish; on average, I supply 5,000 fish to the market each month. Thanks to that, I earn over 40 million VND per month.”
Breeding Thai Betta fish is not difficult; breeders just need to understand the egg extraction process, environmental management techniques, and feeding methods. Accordingly, the farm must be well-covered to protect against rain or direct sunlight; and the water should be changed every three days.
The fish are fed mainly tubifex worms, but they must be thoroughly cleaned, ideally soaked in water for 12 hours to remove all impurities. On average, male and female fish can be bred once every 15 days, with a survival rate of about 500 fry. The fry can be sold after about 3 months of breeding.
To ensure the fish achieve the desired color and quality, breeders need to separate the male and female fish, selecting those with good coloration and size for further breeding. Additionally, breeders purchase additional Thai Betta fish from other farms to crossbreed, contributing to the creation of high-quality, beautifully colored fish. Thanks to his passion and dedication, the Thai Betta fish bred by Mr. Binh have been well-received, and at times, the farm's fish supply has been insufficient to meet market demand.
Mr. Binh said: "It's because of my passion that I've been able to stick with the fish breeding business, because although it's not a demanding job, there's always work to be done. Therefore, anyone who wants to be involved in breeding Thai Betta fish must truly be passionate and not just follow trends. With passion, we can explore, research, and overcome all obstacles."
Living your passion and earning a stable income from it is not easy for many people, but Mr. Binh has achieved this through determination, acumen, and dedication. Hopefully, Mr. Binh's model of breeding and selling Thai Betta fish will continue to develop, contributing to motivating and inspiring young people who want to start a business from their passion but are still hesitant.
