Fifty years after liberation, Buon Ma Thuot city in Dak Lak province has risen strongly, becoming one of the most dynamic and modern urban centers in the Central Highlands. Throughout its half-century development, especially during the 2020-2025 term, Buon Ma Thuot city has left many important marks in economic and social development and in mobilizing resources for infrastructure construction, making Buon Ma Thuot a worthy central urban center of the Central Highlands region.
In our conversation, Comrade Vu Van Hung , Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Committee of Buon Ma Thuot city, expressed his pride in the impressive results achieved by the Party Committee, government, and people of all ethnic groups in the city during the 2020-2025 term.
Comrade Vu Van Hung stated that the Party Committee, government, and people of all ethnic groups in Buon Ma Thuot city are implementing the Resolutions of the Party Congresses at all levels, and the Resolution of the 15th Party Congress of Buon Ma Thuot city , term 2020-2025, under conditions facing many difficulties and challenges such as: constant sabotage by hostile forces; changes in land and investment policies; increasingly complex climate change, natural disasters, and epidemics, especially the prolonged consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, which greatly affect economic and social development and the lives of the people…
On October 30, 2023, Buon Ma Thuot city inaugurated and put into use the East-West road, now known as Vo Nguyen Giap road.
However, amidst these difficulties and challenges, the Party Committee of Buon Ma Thuot city has further affirmed its leadership capacity, leading the government and people of all ethnic groups to unite, strive, and overcome all difficulties and challenges, achieving comprehensive and outstanding results in all fields, successfully implementing the Resolution of the 15th Congress of the Buon Ma Thuot City Party Committee, bringing Buon Ma Thuot to continue its rapid and sustainable development, and continuously improving the lives of its people in all aspects.
According to the leaders of Buon Ma Thuot city, the biggest achievement in the 2020-2025 term of the city is in the field of economic and social development and the mobilization of resources for infrastructure construction. In the 2021-2025 period, the city's economic growth rate reached 13.51%, exceeding the target set in the Resolution and 1.02 times higher than the 2015-2020 period.
The scale of the economy has expanded, contributing an increasingly large proportion to the socio-economic development of the city and Dak Lak province, estimated to reach VND 66,899 billion by the end of 2025, an increase of 1.88 times compared to 2020.
The economic structure continues to shift positively and in the right direction. By 2025, the proportion of trade and services will account for 52.56%, industry and construction 42.69%, and agriculture will decrease to 4.75%. The average per capita production value will reach 229 million VND, an increase of 1.8 times compared to 2020 and 1.04 times higher than the target set in the Resolution.
The East-West Highway, now in use, has contributed to changing the face of transportation in Buon Ma Thuot city.
In the early years of implementing the Resolution, despite the prolonged Covid-19 pandemic and its severe consequences, the city's production value in 2025 is estimated to reach VND 28,558 billion, an increase of 1.85 times compared to 2020. Of which, the industrial production value alone is estimated at VND 18,078 billion, with an average annual increase of 13.22%, 1.86 times higher than in 2020.
Construction and trade/service activities in Buon Ma Thuot city continue to grow strongly due to increased investment in economic sectors and the urbanization process, as well as the development of connecting transportation. By 2025, the value of production in the construction sector is expected to reach VND 10,480 billion, an increase of 1.84 times compared to 2020.
Of these, approximately 550 projects and works were invested in and constructed using state budget funds, including 94 ongoing projects, 446 newly started projects, and 10 small-scale projects under the National Target Program for New Rural Development… Among them are several large projects such as: the East-West Road, Hung Vuong Road (Phase 1), Phan Huy Chu Road, Ea Tam Irrigation Lake, 19/5 Road, Ton Duc Thang Road, and the Buon Mrê-Buon Nieng road (Phase 1)… These projects have been invested in and constructed, with some large projects such as the East-West Road already completed and put into use, contributing to changing the face of the city towards modernization.

In 2025, trade and services in Buon Ma Thuot city are estimated to reach VND 35,164 billion, a 2.01-fold increase compared to 2020, with an average growth rate of 15.03% during the 2020-2025 period. Total retail sales of goods are estimated to reach VND 88,344 billion, a 91.98% increase compared to 2020.
Although agriculture accounts for a low proportion of the economic structure, the city is paying close attention to promoting it with many solutions to encourage and support the development of production, business, and restructuring towards increasing added value and sustainable development, with an average annual increase of 3.8% in production value. By 2025, the city's agricultural, forestry, and fisheries production value is estimated to reach 3,178 billion VND, equivalent to 120.51% compared to 2020.
In 2020, Buon Ma Thuot city was recognized by the Prime Minister as having completed the task of building new rural areas.
In particular, the new rural development program of Buon Ma Thuot city has achieved outstanding results. In 2020, Buon Ma Thuot city was the first district-level unit in Dak Lak to complete the new rural development task.
During the term, in addition to the state budget, Buon Ma Thuot city mobilized the people to contribute money, labor, land, and construction projects totaling over 293 billion VND, along with other legitimate resources, to invest in economic and social infrastructure. As a result, by 2025, the city will have 6 communes meeting the advanced new rural standards and 2 communes meeting the criteria for model new rural communes, fulfilling the Resolution of the 15th City Party Congress. Average per capita income in rural areas increased from 42.4 million VND in 2020 to 60.9 million VND in 2024. The poverty rate in rural areas decreased to 0.02%.
Chairman of the People's Committee of Buon Ma Thuot City, Vu Van Hung, affirmed: With the efforts of the Party Committee, the government, and all levels and sectors, during the 2020-2025 term, the work of revenue collection and mobilization of resources for infrastructure investment in the city has seen many positive developments compared to the previous term.
In 2022, Buon Ma Thuot city was awarded the Third-Class Labor Medal by the President of Vietnam for its outstanding achievements in the "Nationwide efforts to build new rural areas" movement.
Specifically, the city's total state budget revenue reached over 11,309 billion VND, a 1.44-fold increase compared to the previous term. Total state budget expenditure is estimated at over 13,997 billion VND, a 2.3-fold increase compared to the 2015-2020 term and a 12.7% increase compared to the plan.
In particular, the total social investment mobilized over the 5-year period is estimated at 125,354 billion VND, an increase of 1.94 times compared to the previous term and a 0.28% increase compared to the target set in the Resolution of the 15th Congress of the Buon Ma Thuot City Party Committee.
In addition, the city, in coordination with relevant departments and agencies, advised the Provincial People's Committee to grant investment licenses and continue to finalize 18 investment projects using land in the city with a total estimated investment capital of 6,940 billion VND, contributing to job creation, promoting labor structure transformation, meeting the needs of infrastructure development and production and business activities of economic sectors in the city...
Thanks to the attention and investment of the Party, the State, and Dak Lak province, along with the efforts and endeavors of the Party committee, the government, and the people of all ethnic groups in the area, Buon Ma Thuot city has developed into a worthy central urban area of the Central Highlands region.
Besides achieving and exceeding the targets set forth in the Resolution of the 15th Congress of the City Party Committee, during the 2020-2025 term, Buon Ma Thuot city also actively coordinated with provincial departments and agencies to advise the Provincial Party Committee, the Provincial People's Council, the Provincial People's Committee of Dak Lak, and central ministries and agencies to promote the implementation of Conclusion No. 67-KL/TW of the Politburo, Resolution No. 72/2022/QH15 of the National Assembly, Resolution No. 103/NQ-CP of the Government, and Resolution 05-NQ/TU of the Dak Lak Provincial Party Committee on building and developing Buon Ma Thuot city until 2030, with a vision to 2045.
These policies and guidelines have been implemented and concretized into key tasks, projects, and initiatives deployed in Buon Ma Thuot city with a total investment of tens of trillions of VND. This has created new resources, addressed bottlenecks and obstacles, effectively exploited the potential and advantages of the locality, successfully achieved the goals, targets, and tasks set forth in the Resolution, and built Buon Ma Thuot into an increasingly prosperous, civilized, and distinctive city, worthy of being the central urban area of the Central Highlands region.
