This bizarre incident occurred in the city of Medellin, Colombia. The couple's identities remain confidential. It all began in 2012 when the husband wanted to have a vasectomy, according to the Daily Mail (UK).
The court ruled that the doctor who performed the failed vasectomy must provide child support until the child turns 18.
The reason he wanted a vasectomy was because he didn't want any more children. He and his wife already had two children together. Their family finances were tight, and they wouldn't be able to support another mouth. Therefore, he sought out a clinic in Medellin to have a vasectomy. The identity of the doctor who performed the procedure was not revealed to the media.
After the procedure, the man even underwent a medical check-up at the clinic to ensure the vasectomy was actually effective. The clinic confirmed the procedure was successful.
However, in 2013, the man's wife unexpectedly became pregnant again, much to their surprise. The vasectomy had failed. The child was a girl, and she was indeed his daughter. In 2017, the couple decided to sue the clinic and the doctor who performed the vasectomy.
The lawsuit dragged on for years. Recently, the Medellin city court issued its final ruling. The court ordered the clinic and doctor to pay the couple 60 million pesos (over 300 million Vietnamese dong) in legal fees. Additionally, they must continue to provide child support of 235 million pesos (approximately 1.3 billion Vietnamese dong) until the child reaches 18 years of age.
Because the man was in poor health, had hearing loss, and frequently experienced drowsiness and vomiting, he had great difficulty working. The court ruled that the decision was reasonable because a failed vasectomy not only affected the couple's sexual and reproductive freedom but also had a significant financial impact, making it difficult to care for the child, according to the Daily Mail .
