All 3 new suspected cases are related to 3 confirmed cases of botulinum poisoning at Children's Hospital 2, previously reported by SGGP Online.
According to Dr. Le Quoc Hung, Head of the Department of Tropical Diseases, Cho Ray Hospital, 3 suspected cases of botulinum poisoning were scattered in 3 hospitals: Gia Dinh People's Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Tropical Diseases and Ho Chi Minh City's Hospital for Tropical Diseases. Cho Ray. After consulting with the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City, the doctors decided to pick up the patient for treatment at Cho Ray Hospital.
Previously, on May 13, a family with 5 siblings (2 years old and 18 years old) and the second family (26-year-old male patient) both had onset of symptoms and had a history of exposure to sources of infection. Suspected food poisoning on May 2. In which, two siblings ate bread with rolls of a street vendor and the 45-year-old patient suspected of eating a type of fish sauce that had been kept for a long time.
By May 14, all 5 patients had symptoms of digestive disorders, fatigue, headache, dizziness, abdominal pain and diarrhea. On May 3, the condition worsened and began to weaken the diplopia, difficulty swallowing.
“With such a cluster of cases, doctors have noticed botulinum poisoning and contacted Cho Ray Hospital to organize a consultation and suspect that these cases are botolinum poisoning. In which, a patient treated at Gia Dinh People's Hospital had a PCR test sample at the Ho Chi Minh City Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology that determined the presence of botolinum toxin. Thus, more than 90% confirmed that this case is botulinum poisoning and originated from food, "said Dr.
According to Dr. Le Quoc Hung, there are currently 2 patients (18 years old and 45 years old) who need mechanical ventilation, while the 26-year-old patient can move and breathe on her own, but the progress is still critical.
According to Dr. Le Quoc Hung, if botulinum poisoning is determined when the antidote to Botulism Antitoxin Heptavalen (BAT) is used early, within 48 to 72 hours, the patient is able to get out of paralysis and avoid mechanical ventilation.
However, in the absence of an antidote for BAT, supportive treatment is required. Because botulinum toxin disease causes damage to the nervous system leading to muscle paralysis. When you are paralyzed, you cannot breathe.
On the same day, Cho Ray Hospital said that 3 children with botulinum poisoning were given BAT antidote, and now there have been initial improvements in muscle recovery. Previously, as reported by SGGP Online Newspaper, Ho Chi Minh City recorded 3 cases of botulinum poisoning caused by eating banh mi from a street vendor, doctors had to spend the night bringing drugs from Quang Nam to treat.
