Do candidates need to go to 'cram schools'?

Báo Đại Đoàn KếtBáo Đại Đoàn Kết23/02/2024

This year's admissions season offers candidates more opportunities to apply to universities by participating in aptitude and critical thinking assessment exams organized by the universities.

In 2024, Hanoi University of Science and Technology held 6 rounds of aptitude assessment exams in 10 provinces and cities, including: Hanoi, Hung Yen, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Thai Nguyen, and Da Nang.

Two exam sessions have already been completed, with the third session scheduled for March 2024. Candidates will receive a certificate of exam results valid for two years, which can be used for admission applications and by higher education institutions nationwide that require their certificates.

Candidates and parents are searching for information about the aptitude test of Hanoi National University.

In 2023, more than 30 higher education institutions used the results of the Hanoi University of Science and Technology's aptitude test for admissions. This year, the number of schools using this test for admissions is expected to continue to increase.

The Center for Testing and Quality Assessment of Training - Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City has just announced the list of 105 universities and colleges that have registered to use the results of the university's competency assessment exam for admission in 2024. Of these, 88 external training institutions will use the exam results to consider a portion of their 2024 enrollment quotas.

According to the plan, this year's aptitude test of the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City will be held in two rounds before the national high school graduation exam.

In 2024, Hanoi National University plans to hold 6 exam sessions. Registration for the first session opened on February 18th. This registration period is for candidates taking the exam on March 23rd and 24th.

According to Professor Nguyen Tien Thao, Director of the Testing Center of Hanoi National University, in 2023, nearly 70 universities registered to use the results of the university's aptitude test. This year, preliminary estimates suggest that the number of universities using the Hanoi National University's aptitude test results for admissions could reach nearly 100 universities in the northern region. In addition, several universities in the southern region are also expected to register to use the test results in the near future.

To achieve the highest possible results in the aptitude and thinking skills assessment exam, many candidates are inclined to seek out cram schools. However, representatives from universities advise candidates to thoroughly understand the exam structure and question types in order to develop an appropriate study plan.

Professor Nguyen Tien Thao, Director of the Testing Center at Hanoi National University, said that the simplest way to do well on the aptitude test is for candidates to spend time practicing with sample tests before the exam registration date. Practicing with sample tests before the exam helps candidates familiarize themselves with the test structure, question types, and time allocation for each question to make the most appropriate choices.

Hanoi University of Education has also released sample questions for the 2024 competency assessment exam to help candidates orient their studies. Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Duc Son - Vice Rector of the university - informed that the university plans to hold the exam only once a year on May 11th.

The exam structure remains the same as last year. Therefore, the leadership of Hanoi Pedagogical University affirms that candidates do not need to attend any "cram schools" to participate in the competency assessment exam. The university's lecturers do not organize competency assessment exam preparation courses, so candidates should not trust any such classes.

Faculty members may participate in drafting exam questions, but this does not mean that their questions will be used. When a question bank is available, the school can select random combinations of questions, not questions from any single individual. In reality, many teachers create exam questions, so no one can collaborate with external parties to organize exam preparation courses for students.
