How long can chicken be kept in the refrigerator?

Báo Hải DươngBáo Hải Dương18/05/2023

Chicken is a familiar food in many households. However, this source of protein has a much higher risk of bacterial contamination than many other foods. That's why proper preparation, storage, and cooking of chicken are crucial.

According to the health and wellness website Healthline (USA), raw and cooked chicken can be preserved for anywhere from a few days to a year, depending on whether it is frozen or refrigerated.

It's important to note that raw chicken is best stored in a leak-proof container to prevent juices from seeping out and contaminating other foods. Cooked chicken should also be refrigerated in an airtight container. If you need to store it for longer than a few days, it's best to use a freezer.

Raw chicken pieces can be stored in the freezer for up to 9 months, while whole chickens can be frozen for up to a year. Cooked chicken can be stored in the freezer for 2-6 months.

How to tell if chicken meat has spoiled.

Color change: Raw and cooked chicken that begins to turn grayish-green is spoiled. Mold spots ranging from gray to green indicate bacterial growth.

It has an odor: Both raw and cooked chicken emit an ammonia-like smell when it spoils. However, this smell may be less noticeable if the chicken has been marinated with sauce, herbs, or spices.

Loose texture: Chicken with a slimy texture has spoiled. Washing away this slime will not kill the bacteria. Instead, doing so may spread bacteria from the poultry to other foods, utensils, and surfaces, causing cross-contamination.
