The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed on social media that the U.S. conducted self-defense attacks against Iran on orders from President Trump, emphasizing that this was "a proportionate response to Iran's unprovoked aggression."
According to Axios, citing a U.S. official, Washington's airstrikes focused on Iranian radar and air defense systems in the area surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to weaken Tehran's surveillance and defense capabilities along this strategic waterway. Reuters, also citing a U.S. official, reported that approximately 20 Iranian targets were attacked.
Iranian media reported that multiple explosions were recorded in areas of Hormozgan province in southern Iran and on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed that the US attacks damaged some infrastructure.
In response, according to Iranian media, the IRGC attacked dozens of targets in the Gulf region. Specifically, the IRGC fired long-range missiles at four targets at the US al-Azraq base in Jordan, and used drones to target the Ali Al Salem base in Kuwait and the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain. US officials said that almost all of Iran's missiles and drones were intercepted and the US reported no casualties or damage.
The tit-for-tat attacks between the US and Iran have become more frequent in recent weeks, not to mention the direct confrontation between Iran and Israel on June 7th. However, President Trump remained optimistic on June 9th, stating that a peace agreement between the US and Iran could be reached "in the next two or three days," at which point the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened immediately.
Thus, according to CNN, Trump has made at least 38 statements about "reaching an agreement" with Iran since March 23, the date when Trump first said that "almost all points in a peace agreement have been agreed upon by the parties involved."
Amid public disbelief in Trump's "very close" prediction, US Vice President JD Vance stated that an agreement with Iran would definitely be signed before the US midterm elections, possibly within the next few weeks or months.
