Having escaped poverty many years ago, and with her house renovated and completed, Ms. Le Thi Bich's life has gradually become more peaceful.
"Only education can lift you out of poverty" is the lesson Ms. Bich has learned after a long journey of supporting her family through hardship. She recounts that if her two children hadn't completed their education, graduated from university, and found stable jobs like they have today, her family would probably still be trapped in poverty.
Previously, Ms. Bich's family was classified as near-poor. With little land for farming, she had to care for her elderly mother, a younger brother with intellectual disabilities, and raise two children who were of school age. The burden of making a living weighed heavily on this woman, who had limited opportunities for education. During the day, she worked as a hired laborer, and in the evenings, she took on additional piecework at home, carefully saving every penny to support her family.
“Those were very difficult times, but luckily, both my children were well-behaved, good students, and loved their mother very much. Seeing how hard I worked, they wanted to go to work to help, but I told them that only through education could they help our family and make their lives less difficult,” Mrs. Bich recalled.
With little inheritance to leave her children, Ms. Bich determined that education was the most valuable asset she could offer them. When her eldest daughter entered university, despite the family's difficult financial situation , Ms. Bich boldly borrowed money from the Social Policy Bank and continued working to cover her daughter's tuition fees. "When my eldest daughter graduated and found a stable job, she came back to help me support her younger sister. Thanks to that, the burden on my shoulders gradually lightened," Ms. Bich shared.
Having been near-poor for over a decade, Mrs. Bich's family life gradually improved as her two children graduated and found stable jobs in Ho Chi Minh City with decent incomes. The solidarity house, built with local support, has now been renovated and is more spacious and comfortable. Her family has also been out of poverty for many years now.
Currently, Mrs. Bich's eldest daughter has started her own business. She frequently travels to Ho Chi Minh City to help her daughter, both to share the workload and to enjoy a more peaceful life after a long period of hard work. "Thanks to my children, my life is much less difficult now," Mrs. Bich confided.
