Threads hits 150 million downloads

According to Neowin , the analysis results from Data.ai show that Threads has had more than 150 million downloads (combining both the App Store and Google Play) within 7 days of its launch. This number is 5.5 times faster than the second fastest app to do this, which is Niantic's Pokémon GO reaching 150 million downloads in 33 days, while Call of Duty: Mobile also took 106 days to do the same.

Instagram's large user base is behind the surge in Threads downloads

Data.ai also notes that Threads had about 93 million global active users in its first week of launch, and that the social network had about a fifth of its global weekly active users compared to rival Twitter.

Conversely, numbers from analytics firms Similarweb and Sensor Tower show that user engagement with the Threads app has declined since its official launch earlier this month.

When it comes to market share, Data.ai said India took the top spot with 33% of app downloads on iOS and Google Play combined as of July 12. Brazil ranked second with 22% share, followed by 16% of downloads coming from the US.

Threads is not yet available in the European Union (EU) due to privacy concerns and is awaiting regulatory approval for launch. In the meantime, Meta is reportedly trying to prevent EU users from using the app via a VPN.

Threads' massive user base is partly due to Instagram's massive user base, despite the app still lacking some key features compared to Twitter. Instagram head Adam Mosseri assures that more Threads features are on the way, but the company has no plans to roll out direct messaging in the app.
