Golden season in Huong Thuy |
High productivity and product quality.
In rural areas these days, it's easy to see fields of golden rice, signaling the harvest of a new crop. Groups of people are on duty in the fields assisting with the rice harvesting machines, while others are transporting the harvested rice home to dry. Combine harvesters are being used to harvest rice in most rice paddies to prepare the land for the summer-autumn planting season.
Mr. Nguyen Trung from Thuy Tan commune (Huong Thuy town) believes that many favorable factors contributed to this year's successful winter-spring rice crop. From planting to the end of the season, the weather was favorable, and the rice grew well. Compared to previous seasons, this winter-spring rice crop also suffered less from pests and diseases. Farmers introduced several new rice varieties, such as JO2, which not only achieved high yields and product quality but also showed excellent resistance to pests and diseases, and were less prone to lodging due to storms. Mr. Trung's 10 sao (approximately 1000 square meters) of rice are estimated to yield over 3 tons, with an average yield of over 60 quintals/hectare. The price of rice this season is equivalent to, or 300-500 VND/kg higher than the previous season.
Mr. Nguyen Quang Hong, Director of Thuy Tan Agricultural Cooperative, affirmed that this was a successful harvest for farmers in terms of both yield and product quality. The total cultivated area of the cooperative is approximately 280 hectares, of which more than half is planted with the new, high-quality rice variety JO2 and 70 hectares with the high-quality rice variety HG244... Combining traditional production experience with the introduction of new, high-quality varieties has resulted in a harvest that not only achieved an average yield of over 60 quintals/hectare but also produced high-quality products.

At Phu Bai Agricultural Cooperative in Thuy Phu commune (Huong Thuy town), farmers, under the guidance of the cooperative, have diversified their cultivation of new, high-quality rice varieties during this winter-spring season. Depending on the specific field conditions, farmers plant suitable rice varieties that are both fast-growing and resistant to pests and diseases. On large fields, farmers simultaneously mobilized to sow, fertilize, weed, and control pests and diseases, minimizing pest and disease damage. The entire cooperative cultivated 286 hectares with a diverse range of rice varieties, such as HP3, JO2, VNR20, HG12, DB18, TBR97, etc. The average yield for the entire cooperative is estimated at nearly 68 quintals/hectare; in particular, the VNR20 rice variety yielded exceptionally well, estimated at around 78 quintals/hectare.
According to Ngo Van Vinh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Huong Thuy Town: In the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop season, Huong Thuy Town planted over 2,657.63 hectares of rice, mostly high-quality rice varieties such as JO2, HG244, HP3, VNR20, HT1, HG12… covering an area of 1,718 hectares (accounting for 64%), with only 366 hectares of Khang Dan rice variety (accounting for 14%) of the total area of the town, the rest being other rice varieties. The rice crops are growing and developing well, especially during the flowering and pollination stages.
Farmers in Quang Dien district are also in the midst of harvesting their rice crops. This is one of the most bountiful rice harvests in this lowland district. Mr. Le Van Thu, Director of Dong Phu Cooperative, believes that many factors contributed to the success of the winter-spring crop, but the mild weather was a major advantage. This season also saw fewer pests and diseases, resulting in relatively high yields and product quality. The estimated average rice yield for the entire cooperative is over 70 quintals/hectare. Rice prices at the beginning of the season were also quite stable, even slightly higher than the previous season.
Severe penalties will be imposed for detecting straw burning in the fields.
According to the city's agricultural sector, localities are proactively updating information on pests, diseases, and weather conditions to take timely measures to accelerate rice harvesting. Cooperatives, localities, and farmers are mobilizing maximum mechanized equipment and combine harvesters to harvest the winter-spring rice crop quickly and efficiently. The city requires localities and the agricultural sector to guide and support farmers in harvesting using combine harvesters and straw balers, and absolutely prohibits burning straw in the fields after harvest to protect the environment and minimize air pollution.
According to Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment Le Van Anh, burning rice straw directly in the fields causes many harmful effects, including environmental pollution, a reduction and limitation of beneficial insects and microorganisms in the soil, and decreased soil fertility. Burning rice straw in fields near provincial roads and other routes also poses a risk of traffic accidents as smoke obscures visibility for road users. Over the years, there have been several unfortunate accidents involving road users due to this practice.
Mr. Le Dinh Lanh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Huong Chu Ward (Huong Tra Town), informed: Immediately after discovering the situation of people burning fields after harvest, the local authorities investigated and decided to fine 4 households for violating the regulations on burning fields, with each violation being fined 2.5 million VND. In addition to the fines, Huong Chu Ward assigned officials to coordinate with residential groups to monitor people harvesting and resolutely punish cases of burning fields according to the law.
Local authorities are encouraging people to rent straw baling machines in the fields after harvest, which both quickly and efficiently collects straw and protects the environment; at the same time, it allows them to utilize this waste product for processing and storing animal feed, and for producing organic fertilizer for agricultural production. Currently, there are hundreds of straw baling machines in the city, ensuring the collection of a large amount of straw after harvest in various localities.
According to Mr. Le Van Anh, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, this winter-spring rice crop saw nearly 28,000 hectares planted throughout the city, with the majority of the area planted with new, high-quality rice varieties. The storms did not affect the yield or quality of the product; only a small area experienced lodging, causing difficulties in harvesting. Currently, localities are in the mass rice harvesting phase. The agricultural sector is coordinating with localities to specifically assess the yield, but initial checks and assessments indicate that this winter-spring rice crop has yielded both a good harvest and good prices. |
