Tran Le Trong Van, the top-scoring student in the entrance exam for the University of Economics and Law in Ho Chi Minh City in 2022, spent months researching and discovering useful methods for responding to risks from Deepfake technology.
With the topic "Enhancing students' capacity to respond to risks from Deepfake technology (a type of technique using artificial intelligence to create fake, false images, sounds, and videos)", Tran Le Trong Van won first prize at the scientific conference "Student Security in the Digital Transformation Era", organized by the Center for the Development of Young Scientists and Technologists (Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union), the People's Security University, and the Department of Science and Technology of Ho Chi Minh City.
Trong Van gave a presentation on the topic "Enhancing students' capacity to respond to risks from Deepfake technology".

In June 2023, based on information he had read, Van realized that many people were being scammed through calls using Deepfake technology, so he began researching this topic. During his research, Van encountered difficulties in finding relevant materials because there weren't many in-depth articles on this subject in Vietnam. Therefore, the student had to read articles and documents from other countries.
In his presentation, the male student summarized several skills that students can use to cope with the risks from Deepfake technology. These include using strong, different passwords for each social media account and changing them frequently; only downloading applications from reputable developers; connecting to secure and password-protected Wi-Fi networks; not downloading or opening suspicious attachments, and not clicking on strange or unknown links...
According to Van, students should also limit sharing sensitive personal information such as images, videos , audio, and voice recordings of themselves or their loved ones with strangers or people they don't trust.
Trong Van hopes to develop his paper into a topic for scientific research.

“Check app permissions to access your camera, microphone, storage, or device location. Only share personal content with authorized people and set privacy settings for posts. Do not reveal information on your personal page, profile, or bio. Do not participate in chats or receive calls with sensitive or unusual content,” Van said.
Van hopes that this topic will contribute to raising students' awareness and capacity in responding to the risks from Deepfake technology. At the same time, it will promote research on controlling and maximizing the benefits of this technology in the future. The student also developed his paper into a scientific research topic. He plans to present his research findings to the Faculty of Law, University of Economics and Law, Ho Chi Minh City in March 2024.
“Students should not blindly trust any information without verifying its source, authenticity, and reliability. A suggested set of criteria for evaluating the authenticity of information could include: Who is the author or spokesperson of the information? Where and when was the information published? Was it cited from other sources, and if so, what were those sources? Is it incomplete, inaccurate, or biased? What is the purpose of the information and who is it directed towards?” Trong Van shared.
While a student at Phan Thanh Giản High School (Ben Tre province), Trong Van won many awards, including: second prize in the provincial-level computer science competition for gifted students, the "Three Good Students" title at the provincial level in the 2019-2020 school year, and third prize in the provincial-level mathematics competition for gifted students...
