Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni accused Trump of fabricating a story about her after the US president told an Italian television channel that she had "begged" him to take a photo with her at the G7 summit.
Video from the summit in France shows Meloni and Trump engaging in lively conversation, but the US President said he was actually just "pleasing her by talking to her."
The latest incident marks a serious deterioration in relations between the two sides, just days after signs at the G7 summit suggested the two leaders had stabilized their relationship after this year's tensions related to the war in Iran.
"Perhaps she's glad I spoke to her. I didn't necessarily have to talk to her," La7 television quoted Trump as saying.
"She begged me to take a picture with her. She really wanted to take a picture with me. I shouldn't have taken it, but I felt guilty," Trump said.
Responding to Trump's statements, Meloni said: "Those statements are completely fabricated. Frankly, I am astonished. I don't understand why the President of the United States would behave this way towards his allies: moreover, this is not the first time."
"I can only say that it is disappointing that he has not shown the same attitude towards his Western and American adversaries. He has treated the leaders of these countries with much more tolerance," she added. "There is one thing he should remember: neither I nor Italy ever beg."
Meloni was a staunch supporter of Trump and is the only European leader to attend his inauguration in 2025.
However, Prime Minister Meloni later criticized the US President for attacking Pope Leo for condemning the Iran conflict, and for distancing herself from Trump after the war began. This led the American leader to accuse her of lacking courage.
