According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, over the past time, under the impact of climate change, land subsidence and extreme weather patterns, riverbanks and coasts of Mekong Delta provinces have become increasingly eroded. important. From 2016 up to now, the whole Mekong Delta has had 779 landslides with a length of over 1.100km. Of these, 281 are particularly dangerous landslides.
During the two-day inspection (August 2-11), field visits were carried out in eight provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta, including: Ca Mau, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Dong Thap, An Giang, Kien Giang, Can Tho and Vinh. For localities in the Mekong Delta, it is necessary to continue implementing structural and non-structural solutions, especially giving priority to implementing urgent solutions to respond in areas where landslides are particularly dangerous, to protect ensure the safety of people and critical infrastructure.
In addition, it is necessary to strictly control the planning and construction of works and houses along the river and along the coast; proactively arrange and relocate population, especially in areas with high risk of landslides; continue to mobilize all resources and have appropriate mechanisms and policies to socialize and invest in landslide prevention and control works; urgent protection of life and property of people in the Mekong Delta landslide.
