The Saigon Polytechnic College football team participated in the 2nd Vietnam Youth and Student Football Tournament 2024.
Submitting your application early is also a 'strategy'.
That's the football team from Saigon Polytechnic College, Ho Chi Minh City. To date, among all the teams participating in the 2nd Vietnam Youth and Student Football Tournament 2024, this is the first team to have completed all the necessary procedures, including submitting team documents, paying the deposit, and other requirements to officially participate in this exciting student football tournament organized by Thanh Nien Newspaper and the Vietnam Football Federation.
On the morning of November 4th, speaking to a reporter from Thanh Nien Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Viet Sang, the head coach of the team, said: "We were aware of and followed the first Vietnam Youth and Student Football Tournament, which featured many strong teams with experience, resources, and training time. That's why our school's team was hesitant to participate."
"University students study for four or five years, but we are a college, and our students only study for a little over two years before doing internships and graduating. The time they spend at the college is not as long as that of college students. But the first competition was so successful and engaging that our students were very eager and always wanted to participate and gain experience in such exciting competitions. So, in the second season, despite our initial reservations, we were determined to register them," Coach Sang added.
The Saigon Polytechnic College football team is practicing on Thursday and Sunday afternoons to prepare for the tournament.
Regarding the reason for completing the registration procedures and submitting the application early, becoming the first team nationwide to do so, Coach Nguyen Viet Sang explained that this was one of the team's "strategies" – completing one step at a time allows the team to focus on training and dedicate all their time and effort to preparing thoroughly for the tournament.
Exercising at midday helps avoid heatstroke.
Follow the Youth Football Tournament The Vietnamese Student Football Team of the 2023 Vietnam Youth Football Tournament is very thorough and also familiar with the schedule of matches in the qualifying rounds of the 2024 Vietnam Youth and Student Football Tournament. Even with matches scheduled for midday and afternoon, and in hot weather, the Saigon Polytechnic College football team is training from 10 am to 12 pm. They train twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays, on rented artificial turf fields in Binh Thanh and Go Vap districts (Ho Chi Minh City). The team has already had 6 training sessions.
Head coach Nguyen Viet Sang said: "We know that when the tournament starts, the players may play matches during midday or early afternoon. Allowing the players to acclimatize to the weather is also a way for them to gradually adjust and avoid heat shock. We clearly understand that once we decide to compete, we must be prepared and overcome various challenges."
Saigon Polytechnic College loves football and has many amateur tournaments to select players for the 2nd Vietnam Youth and Student Football Tournament 2024.
To select the 23 outstanding players to represent Saigon Polytechnic College in the 2nd Vietnam Youth and Student Football Tournament 2024, Head Coach Nguyen Viet Sang said that the school organized a student football tournament within the school, selecting players with good physical fitness and technique. The team mainly consists of first-year students, some of whom participated in local football tournaments during their high school years.
As a relatively young team, this was the first time the school's team participated in a large-scale 11-a-side football tournament like the Vietnam Youth and Student Football Tournament. According to head coach Nguyen Viet Sang, the players were initially quite unfamiliar with the game. Many had primarily played 5-a-side football before, so they lacked the necessary tactical awareness and positional control when playing 11-a-side. However, success in anything takes time.
The passion for football comes from the coach.
The Saigon Polytechnic College football team receives support and encouragement from teachers who love football. In particular, that includes the principal, Dr. Hoang Van Phuc. Dr. Phuc was once very passionate about amateur football in Ho Chi Minh City and remains just as enthusiastic about the sports movement.
Driven by the school principal's passion for sports, Saigon Polytechnic College has consistently prioritized physical education and sports for its students over the years, alongside professional training. Each year, the school organizes four major sports events for students, featuring various sports such as football, tug-of-war, volleyball, and athletics. These events are held on occasions such as welcoming new students; celebrating Vietnamese Teachers' Day on November 20th; commemorating the founding of the Youth Union on March 26th; and inter-departmental sports competitions.

The team's head coach, Nguyen Viet Sang, graduated from the Physical Education Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education. He previously played for his university's football team and participated in the 2018 Ho Chi Minh City University of Education Student Football Tournament. Always passionate about grassroots football, despite his busy schedule, Coach Nguyen Viet Sang and his colleagues still play friendly matches weekly on artificial turf fields in Binh Thanh District, District 12, and other areas.
Notably, this year, alongside Coach Sang in leading the Saigon Polytechnic College team, and providing support in terms of professional training and physical fitness, is Coach Huynh Minh Cuong. Coach Cuong was formerly a player for the Ho Chi Minh City U.17 team and is currently a physical education lecturer at an academy in Ho Chi Minh City.
"Next week, the Saigon Polytechnic College team will play a friendly match against the Ho Chi Minh City Open University team. Our players are very excited and eager for these friendly matches, which are practice sessions for the qualifying round of the 2nd Vietnam Youth and Student Football Tournament 2024. Our view is that students not only need to be good at their profession and knowledge but also need to participate in many sports activities, football exchanges, and competitions in amateur tournaments. This not only helps students have good physical fitness for studying and working but also helps them build confidence and enhance their ability to interact and connect," Coach Nguyen Viet Sang expressed.
