(NLĐO) - On the afternoon of March 15, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh received Professor Thomas Vallely, Senior Advisor on Vietnam at the Weatherhead East Asia Institute (WEAI), Columbia University (USA).

The Prime Minister expressed his pleasure at meeting Professor Thomas Vallely again on the occasion of Vietnam and the United States celebrating the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations; he highly appreciated the professor's affection for Vietnam and his important contributions to the cooperation between the two countries, especially in the fields of education and policy dialogue; and thanked Professor Thomas Vallely and Professor Nguyen Thi Lien Hang (Columbia University) for their efforts in maintaining the Vietnam Senior Leadership Program (VELP), continuing to promote research and policy dialogue on the Vietnamese economy with new content, at a new location, Columbia University.
The Prime Minister took the time to share information about Vietnam's socio-economic situation, especially the important and positive results in 2024, the vision and development orientation, growth and development targets for the coming period, new thinking, methodologies, and approaches to solving practical problems, and key tasks and solutions in various fields.

Affirming that Vietnam always desires to further strengthen the already excellent cooperative relationship with the United States, and emphasizing the important role of education and training in development—that investing in people is investing in sustainable development—the Prime Minister requested the Professor to continue to pay attention to promoting cooperation in education and training, contributing to the advancement of Vietnam-US relations.
Furthermore, we will continue to promote appropriate policy dialogues and exchanges to advise and recommend solutions for Vietnam's rapid and sustainable development, achieving the target of 8% growth in 2025 and double-digit growth in the subsequent period; renewing traditional growth drivers and promoting new ones; breakthroughs in science and technology development, promoting digital transformation and innovation; and developing the private sector in Vietnam.
At the same time, proposals and recommendations are made to promote international cooperation and leverage the connecting role to mobilize financial resources, knowledge, technology transfer, human resource training, improve governance capacity, and perfect institutions for Vietnam.

For his part, Professor Thomas Vallely reiterated his positive feelings and impressions of Vietnam; affirming that he will continue to promote cooperation activities with Vietnam, especially in the areas and contents that the Prime Minister has commented on, particularly dialogue, consultation, policy input, and the implementation of the VELP program.
