According to previous development plans and orientations, TKV's mechanical engineering division was designed, equipped, and its production processes primarily focused on repairing specialized equipment in open-pit and underground mining and coal processing. In the last 10 years, TKV has prioritized the transition from repair engineering to manufacturing engineering, gradually mastering design and technology to produce replacement parts and equipment for imported goods. TKV's mechanical engineering production units have invested in and equipped themselves with many modern, integrated technological devices for precision machining processes and are gradually automating production stages. Some production processes have utilized robots to increase machining accuracy, improve productivity, and enhance working conditions.
In parallel with providing repair services to support key production sectors, TKV's mechanical engineering division is currently stepping up research and development of products to replace imported goods for use in the mining, processing, and transportation of coal and minerals, as well as in thermal power and alumina production. As a result, instead of importing all equipment and machinery from abroad, TKV has now mastered the technology and successfully manufactured many products.
Notably, the EKG-10 excavator has a bucket capacity of up to 10m3; trucks have a payload of up to 35 tons; the Com-bai AM-50Z combined tunnel boring machine; explosion-proof hydraulic excavators for underground mines have bucket capacities from 0.15-0.6m3; and explosion-proof battery-powered electric locomotives for underground mines have a traction force of up to 120kN. TKV's mechanical factories also localize and assemble specialized transport vehicles such as industrial explosives mixing and loading vehicles and explosives transport vehicles. In particular, they have built new watercraft, including dry cargo ships with a tonnage of up to 15,000 tons; designed and manufactured vehicles for transporting people, equipment, and materials in steep mine tunnels; manufactured self-propelled support systems and mobile frame supports for mechanized longwall mining; and produced various types of support columns and hydraulic cylinders for underground coal mining with diameters up to 280mm. Distribution substations up to 250MVA-220kV; high-quality explosion-proof switchgear, transformers, and contactors up to 1,250kVA-10/0.4kV.
In the context of Vietnam's science and technology sector undergoing a period of innovation and development with many opportunities ahead, especially after the Politburo issued Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW (dated December 22, 2024) on breakthroughs in science and technology development, innovation, and national digital transformation, TKV recognizes that with its existing capabilities in the field of mechanical processing and manufacturing, this is an opportunity for TKV's mechanical engineering sector to innovate, accelerate development, and participate more deeply in global supply chains, especially with foreign direct investment (FDI) enterprises in Vietnam.
Accordingly, in the automotive assembly industry, TKV Mechanical Engineering currently has an assembly line for transport vehicles with a capacity of 1,500 vehicles per year. TKV's mechanical engineering factories are promoting the manufacturing and localization of parts during the assembly process. In the initial phase, TKV Mechanical Engineering achieved a localization rate of approximately 16% and has developed and implemented a roadmap to achieve a localization rate of up to 40% for Kamaz transport vehicles from the Russian Federation. In recent years, TKV Mechanical Engineering has participated in manufacturing and supplying some precision-machined parts to other countries such as Japan and Norway. Thus, in this field, TKV is ready to participate in the assembly, renovation, and localization of oversized and overweight transport vehicles used in the mining industry and transport equipment used in dual-use industries, as well as assembling commercial vehicles.
Regarding the manufacturing of accessories and spare parts for the railway transport industry, for many years, TKV has manufactured bogies for railway carriages (1,000mm gauge) and built new 35-ton freight cars with quality comparable to imported products used in mineral transport. In the future, when railway projects are implemented, the railway industry will take the lead in receiving the transfer of technologies for manufacturing railway carriages, wheel axles, braking systems, bogies, etc., and will collaborate with mechanical engineering enterprises to produce some materials, spare parts, and equipment for urban and high-speed railways, achieving a localization rate of 30-40%. In this field, TKV is ready to participate in the manufacturing and construction of freight cars, power distribution stations, bogie systems, etc., on the national railway and participate in the manufacturing and supply of materials and spare parts for railway infrastructure.
A representative from TKV's leadership stated: To quickly participate in global economic chains, including programs for the development of the automotive and railway industries, TKV hopes that the Government, ministries, and Quang Ninh province will provide specific solutions and support mechanisms regarding investment capital for key mechanical engineering sectors, building domestic supply chains to leverage the strengths of domestic manufacturing enterprises, reducing dependence on imported raw materials and components from abroad; and concretizing regulations and guidelines in the assembly, renovation, and registration of large transport vehicles used in the mining industry. At the same time, conditions should be created to ensure the stability of TKV's key mechanical factories in terms of location and production environment through land lease policies and guaranteeing a stable energy supply for production.
