Welcoming the Australian delegation, on the side of MONRE, there were representatives of leaders of the following units: Department of International Cooperation; Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union; Department of Climate Change; Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment.
Welcoming the Australian Political Exchange Council Delegation to visit and work with the MONRE, Mr. Le Ngoc Tuan - Director of the International Cooperation Department said that Vietnam - Australia have had a long-term cooperation relationship, especially this year is the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Looking back at the cooperation relationship between MONRE and Australian agencies over the past time, the Director General of the Department of International Cooperation shared that MONRE has been cooperating with Australian partners in the fields of state management of the Ministry such as water resources, land, geology and minerals, climate change and the environment.
With valuable support from the Australian Government and people, many officials and employees of the Ministry have participated in short-term, long-term training courses as well as postgraduate training provided by the Australian Government. Most recently, Australia has supported relevant Vietnamese agencies in building the capacity of civil servants on carbon markets. In addition, MONRE is also supported by the Government and Australian experts, sharing knowledge and experience in developing legal documents, typically in the development of the revised Law on Water Resources and the revised Law on Geology and Minerals.
“In the context of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Australia (February 26, 02 – February 1973, 26), the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment wishes to further promote cooperation with Australia in areas such as environmental protection, fulfilling the ambitious COP02 commitment to net zero emissions by 2023”, Mr. Le Ngoc Tuan expressed.
Appreciating the deep relationship between the two Governments of Vietnam and Australia, Representative Michael Petterson shared, Australia is always interested in the common points with Vietnam in environmental protection and climate change response. Therefore, at this working session, the Australian Political Exchange Council Delegation wanted to learn more about the State management in the field of natural resources and environment, solutions to reduce air pollution in transportation, shift to renewable energy and the role of organizations and businesses accompanying in these issues.
At the meeting, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dinh Tho - Director of Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment shared about the organizational structure, functions and tasks of MONRE, policies related to resource management and environmental protection. Dr. Luong Quang Huy - Head of GHG emission mitigation and ozone layer protection, Climate Change Department introduced a synthesis of policies related to climate change and energy in general of Vietnam.
In summary, Director General of International Cooperation Department Le Ngoc Tuan emphasized, Vietnam has been making efforts on the path of green growth. The results achieved in the past time, besides the efforts of the Government and people, also have the companionship of the international community, including Australia.
In the coming time, in order to achieve the goals that Vietnam has committed to the world, Vietnam urgently needs policy support, attracting investment resources to fill the "gap" in environmental protection and climate change adaptation.
“Through the young Australian MPs, we want to convey the message: Vietnam is responsibly fulfilling its commitments to the international community. We look forward to supporting technology transfer, sharing experience in policy formulation to better address environmental, resource and climate issues. This is a cooperation for the mutual benefit of the two Governments and peoples of the two countries," said Director General Le Ngoc Tuan.
