Cooling foods are in high demand.
According to observations by reporters on several streets in Hanoi such as Tran Duy Hung, Nguyen Chi Thanh, Thai Ha, Chua Boc, Le Duan, Kim Lien, etc., stalls selling coconut water and sugarcane juice are always crowded with customers.
Ms. Nguyen Thu Nga, who sells sugarcane juice on Tran Duy Hung Street (Cau Giay Ward), said: "During peak hot days, I sell out 50 sugarcane stalks in a single morning. Currently, sugarcane juice costs 10,000 VND per cup, 25,000 VND per liter if bought by the liter, and 20,000 VND per liter if bought in quantities of 4 liters or more. On hot days, the number of customers increases 3-4 times compared to normal days. Every day I sell about 200 cups of sugarcane juice, earning a profit of over 1 million VND. Despite the sweltering weather, I still try to stay at my stall to serve the people's thirst," Ms. Nga shared.

Not only sugarcane juice but also Ben Tre Siamese coconuts are selling out fast. Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh, owner of a wholesale and retail coconut stall on Xa Dan Street (O Cho Dua Ward), said: "Every day, my family sells hundreds of green Ben Tre Siamese coconuts, with wholesale prices around 15,000 - 17,000 VND/coconut and retail prices of 25,000 - 28,000 VND/coconut."
Along with familiar beverages, this year's market has seen the emergence of many types of herbal drinks that are cooling and refreshing during the hot season, such as: artichoke, seaweed, chrysanthemum, grass jelly, ginseng jelly, monk fruit, etc.
Hanoi is experiencing a peak heatwave, leading to high demand for cooling food items such as crabs, clams, mussels, oysters, zucchini, green vegetables, and fruits. However, preservation is difficult, causing prices to increase slightly by 5-15% compared to the beginning of the month. Specifically, leafy vegetables like water spinach, mustard greens, and jute mallow are currently priced at 15,000-25,000 VND per bunch; tomatoes at 28,000-35,000 VND per kilogram; freshwater crabs at 300,000 VND per kilogram; clams at 30,000 VND per kilogram; and freshwater shrimp at 250,000 VND per kilogram.
While seafood is in high demand, pork and beef are experiencing sluggish sales. Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, a pork vendor at Kim Lien Market (Kim Lien Ward), said: "In recent days, the hot weather has significantly reduced the number of customers buying pork. Therefore, my family has reduced the amount of pork we import from 60kg/day to 40kg/day." According to Ms. Huong, pork ribs are selling well during the hot weather because housewives use them to make sour soup, so the price has increased slightly. Currently, pork ribs are commonly priced at 150,000-160,000 VND/kg, which is 10,000-15,000 VND higher than before the hot weather.
Explaining the reason for the price increase of cooling foods during hot weather, small traders selling fresh food share the opinion that high temperatures make preserving fresh food difficult. Goods spoil quickly and suffer significant losses, forcing businesses to increase the frequency of restocking as well as incur additional costs for transportation and cold storage, thus driving up prices.
Supermarkets offer discounts to stimulate consumer spending.
Amidst the intense heatwave in Hanoi, many retail chains such as Co.opmart, Go!, and WinMart have launched a series of deep discount programs on cooling products to meet the surge in consumer demand.
According to Nguyen Thi Thu Hang, Director of GO! Thang Long Supermarket: The supermarket system has proactively prepared essential goods to meet consumer demand during the hot season, especially green vegetables, fresh food, and refreshing drinks. Promotional programs and price stabilization efforts continue to be maintained, thereby limiting price increases due to fluctuations in transportation and storage costs. “Increasing promotional programs, offering discounts, and diversifying essential goods not only stimulates purchasing power but also contributes to maintaining the recovery momentum of the retail market amidst economic uncertainties,” Ms. Hang shared.

At Co.op Mart supermarkets, from now until June 10th, they are running a "Summer Festival - Unbeatable Sale" program, offering discounts on a wide range of products to help you cool down and replenish energy during the summer, such as bottled water, mineral water, jelly, ice cream, etc. Simultaneously, convenient products like soft drinks and ice cream are also discounted by up to 50%. Not to be outdone, WinMart supermarkets are also running a promotion called "Enjoy a Refreshing Summer, Beat the Heat," offering discounts on VietGap-certified industrial chicken thighs, snakehead fish cakes, Bach Tuyet seafood mushrooms, green pomelo, watermelon, and soft drinks.
According to Nguyen Thi Kim Dung, Director of Co.opmart Ha Dong Supermarket, the simultaneous implementation of promotional programs for food, beverages, and cooling products has helped increase sales at the supermarket system by nearly 50% in the past two weeks. “Currently, Co.opmart is offering discounts of 20% to 30% on thousands of items. These promotional programs not only meet the shopping needs of people during the hot season but also contribute to stimulating consumer demand and boosting the system's business activities in the future,” Ms. Dung emphasized.
Regarding the supply of goods for consumers, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade, Nguyen The Hiep, stated: The supply of goods in Hanoi remains basically stable, with no shortages yet. Supermarket promotions have helped increase retail sales by an average of 20% compared to the beginning of May, with cooling food and personal cooling products accounting for a large proportion of revenue. “It is predicted that in the coming period, if the hot weather continues, the prices of some fresh produce may fluctuate slightly, but a sudden price increase is unlikely due to the currently abundant supply,” Mr. Hiep affirmed.
