Thac Mo Hydropower Plant - A 30-Year Journey

The Thac Mo Hydropower Plant commenced construction on November 20, 1991. The plant has two generating units with a total capacity of 150 MW, producing 610 million kWh per year. Despite facing numerous difficulties, thanks to the timely support and assistance from the Government , the former Ministry of Energy, the then-leaders of Song Be province with unprecedented mechanisms, and the tireless efforts of the leadership and workers, on January 6, 1995, Unit 1 of the plant officially connected to the national power grid, and on April 30, 1995, Unit 2 also supplied energy to the national system.

Mr. Tran Phu Thai, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Power Generation Corporation 2, delivered a speech at the anniversary ceremony.

Mr. Nguyen Cuong Lam, former Deputy General Director of Vietnam Electricity Group, shared the mechanism for building power plants.

Two generating units with a total capacity of 150MW, connected to the national power grid when the 500kV circuit 1 transmission line became stable, have significantly contributed to fundamentally resolving the electricity shortage in the South.

Over its 30-year journey of construction and development, Thac Mo Hydropower Plant has experienced several important milestones. On June 11, 1994, the Thac Mo Hydropower Plant was established by the Ministry of Energy as a unit under Power Company No. 2, with the main task of managing and operating the Thac Mo Hydropower Plant. On March 4, 1995, the plant became a subsidiary accounting unit of Vietnam Electricity Corporation.

After nearly 11 years since its establishment, on March 30, 2005, Thac Mo Hydropower Plant was transformed into Thac Mo Hydropower Company, an independent accounting member of Vietnam Electricity Corporation, now Vietnam Electricity Group - EVN. As part of the restructuring and equitization roadmap for the electricity sector to improve operational efficiency and promote development, on January 1, 2008, Thac Mo Hydropower Company officially became Thac Mo Hydropower Joint Stock Company, with a charter capital of 700 billion VND, of which EVN holds 51.92%.

Besides improving technology and enhancing production and business efficiency, the company is also continuously expanding its business scale through investment in other enterprises. In July 2017, the company operated the expanded Thac Mo Hydropower Plant, increasing the plant's capacity from 150MW to 225MW, adding 52 million kWh to the national power grid annually.

In line with the trend of renewable energy development and to maximize the utilization of available resources, the company decided to invest in the construction of the Thac Mo Solar Power Plant with a capacity of 50MWp in Phuoc Long town and Bu Gia Map district, contributing to an increase in Thac Mo's electricity production of over 71 million kWh per year.

Over the past 30 years, the company has produced more than 22 billion kWh, thereby strongly promoting the electrification program in Binh Phuoc, contributing to the rapid socio -economic development of the province.

Mr. Tran Van Mi, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Binh Phuoc province, presented the certificate of commendation from the Provincial People's Committee to Thac Mo Hydropower Joint Stock Company.

Mr. Tran Phu Thai, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Power Generation Corporation 2, presented certificates of commendation from the State Capital Management Committee at Enterprises to 2 collectives and 8 individuals.

Three groups and 16 individuals were awarded by Vietnam Electricity Group.

Thac Mo Hydropower Joint Stock Company has set a vision for the coming years to be one of the leading companies in sustainable, safe, reliable, and highly efficient development in three areas: electricity production and trading, renewable energy development; new energy sources; and providing electricity services nationwide. Simultaneously, it aims to work with Power Generation Corporation 2 and Vietnam Electricity Group to ensure energy security and contribute to the socio-economic development of the country.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Tran Phu Thai, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Power Generation Corporation 2, highly appreciated the achievements of Thac Mo Hydropower Plant over the past 30 years. He also requested the company to strengthen the implementation of measures to prevent waste and corruption; to research and reorganize its organizational structure towards a streamlined approach, ensuring effective and efficient operation; to focus on expanding production and business activities, maximizing existing potential, and promoting investment in new projects in the renewable energy sector, striving to double the current capacity by 2030 in accordance with the corporation's directives; and to utilize financial resources to increase value and expand the investment portfolio.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of Power Generation Corporation 2, Tran Phu Thai, expressed confidence that with the tradition of hard work, unity, and innovation of the leadership and employees of Thac Mo Hydropower Joint Stock Company, the unit will firmly overcome the challenges in the new situation and continue to write new chapters in its journey of "jointly lighting up".

At the ceremony, collectives and individuals who have made significant contributions to the company's development were awarded certificates of merit by the People's Committee of Binh Phuoc province, the State Capital Management Committee at enterprises, and Vietnam Electricity Group.
