The National Economics University (NEU) has just organized a policy dialogue with the topic: "US reciprocal tariff policy: Impact and strategic adjustment for Vietnam", aiming to collect many highly practical strategic solutions, to support Vietnamese enterprises and economy to proactively adapt, minimize risks and take advantage of opportunities in the context of the rapidly changing and unpredictable international economic environment.

According to assessments, export turnover to the US accounts for 30% of the country's total export value, along with a trade surplus with this market equivalent to more than 20% of GDP, so the US imposing a tax rate of up to 46% on goods exported from Vietnam will certainly have a profound impact on import and export activities, putting great pressure on the trade balance and directly affecting the key growth drivers of the economy.

Regarding this, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hieu - Deputy Director of NEU, said: "The new US tax policy is considered a direct blow to the strategic export sector, negatively affecting not only export turnover but also FDI capital flows into Vietnam in the coming time".

In that context, experts emphasized the importance of developing timely and appropriate response strategies. At the same time, they said that Vietnam needs to pursue goals such as minimizing the negative impact of countervailing duties on export enterprises, ensuring the stability of the domestic market and domestic supply chain, maintaining the confidence of international investors; thereby turning challenges into a driving force for reform to improve national competitiveness.

Another important direction is to promote investment in high-quality human resources, quickly access new technologies in the world and build a transparent and fair investment environment. These are key factors to enhance Vietnam's position in the global supply chain. In addition, in the coming period, Vietnam needs to proactively take advantage of opportunities from the new context to reposition its development strategy; promote the development of high-tech fields such as semiconductors, AI, software, new materials, etc., while opening the door for US businesses to participate more deeply in the domestic market.
