According to Bloomberg , the European Commission (EC) is actively studying measures to force European Union (EU) member states to gradually remove Huawei and ZTE equipment from their national telecommunications networks.
Specifically, EU Technology Commissioner Henna Virkkunen is seeking to turn the EC's 2020 proposal recommending a ban on the use of high-risk mobile network suppliers such as Huawei and ZTE into a legally binding requirement.
This move stems from concerns that Chinese companies' control over critical telecommunications infrastructure could jeopardize national security, amid escalating US-China trade tensions.
In addition, Ms. Virkkunen's proposal also aims to restrict the use of Chinese equipment in fixed networks and prevent non-EU countries from using Huawei equipment by withholding Global Gateway funding.
Concerns about Huawei and ZTE have resurfaced across Europe, with both Germany and Finland considering stricter restrictions on the Chinese suppliers.
While countries like the UK and Sweden banned Chinese suppliers years ago, many others, such as Spain and Greece, continue to grant licenses.
Telecommunications operators also expressed their opposition, arguing that Huawei's technology was cheaper and better than Western alternatives such as Nokia and Ericsson.
