According to the South Korean news site ETNews , Samsung Display will supply low-temperature polycrystalline silicon oxide (LTPO+) OLED panels for Apple's upcoming high-end smartphone models, including the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Fold.
These panels utilize oxide technology in the controller, which improves energy efficiency while also supporting the placement of infrared cameras beneath the screen.
With LTPO+ OLED panels, future iPhone models could be more energy-efficient while maintaining a variable refresh rate of 1-120 Hz.
Samsung Display is also the only brand that offers foldable OLED panels with a crease-free design for the iPhone Fold.
Apple's Face ID system consists of three components: a light source, an infrared camera, and a laser dot projector. Currently, all of these sensors are housed in the Dynamic Island on the display.
With the use of LTPO+ panels on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Fold, Apple may move the Face ID sensors under the screen instead of keeping them inside the notch.
A key benefit of LTPO+ is greater energy efficiency compared to the current LTPO technology in the iPhone 17 series. This opens up the possibility of extending iPhone battery life, while Apple doesn't need to upgrade capacity or make other improvements.
Apple is working to diversify its display supply chain by partnering with Chinese OLED panel manufacturers such as BOE.
However, LG Display and Samsung Display continue to lead the industry in OLED technology, quality, and mass production capacity. As a result, BOE has been excluded from the list of panel suppliers for Apple's high-end iPhone models.
"Apple wants to reduce its dependence on South Korea through a Chinese partnership, but ultimately, South Korean companies are superior in quality, productivity, and other aspects, so they have no other choice," ETNews quoted a display technology expert as saying.
