The venue for the Finalissima match has not yet been finalized. |
The Finalissima match between Spain and Argentina, originally scheduled to take place at the Lusail Stadium in Doha on March 27, is now in the process of being moved to Santiago Bernabeu.
Numerous sources indicate that negotiations between UEFA, Qatar, and Real Madrid are very close to reaching an agreement.
According to sources involved in the negotiations, Qatar, the event organizer, has expressed support for moving the match to Madrid. Real Madrid has not officially confirmed, but has acknowledged its willingness to host the clash between the two most recent champions of Europe and South America.
In fact, Real Madrid had even internally informed some staff to prepare for the possibility of the Bernabeu stadium hosting the match on March 27th.
The main reason for the change stems from the security situation in the Middle East. Following attacks related to tensions between the US, Israel, and Iran since the end of February, Qatar has suspended all domestic football tournaments. This has left plans to host the Finalissima in Doha in a state of uncertainty.
However, moving the venue to Madrid also caused some controversy. If the Bernabeu were chosen, the neutrality of the match would be violated, and Argentina was not entirely happy with this option. Nevertheless, the tight timeframe forced all parties to make a decision quickly.
Another obstacle is that the Finalissima is part of a six-match international tournament at the Qatar Football Festival, scheduled to take place from March 26 to 31, featuring Spain, Argentina, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Serbia. Sponsorship agreements and team fees are all tied to this event package, making a change of venue complicated.
CONMEBOL and UEFA are working with stakeholders to find a suitable solution. A crucial meeting is underway and a final decision on the venue for the Finalissima could be made very soon.
