According to traders, durian in the Mekong Delta is currently nearing the end of its harvest season, while production in the Eastern region is gradually increasing. The Eastern and Central Highlands regions are playing an increasingly important role in Vietnam's durian and fruit and vegetable industry.
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (VINAFRUIT), predicts that durian prices will continue to rise in the near future due to a decrease in supply to China as durian in eastern Thailand is nearing the end of its harvest season. This region boasts the largest area, highest production volume, and best quality in Thailand, while the southern region, which starts its harvest season from July to September, has lower production and lower quality. In recent years, Vietnam's durian exports have accelerated from June and reached their highest value in September and October.
Preliminary customs data shows that in May, fruit and vegetable exports were estimated at $615 million, a 15% increase compared to April, but only equivalent to the same period last year due to difficulties in exporting. For the first five months of the year, fruit and vegetable exports reached $2.7 billion, a 16% increase compared to the same period in 2016.
