Beyond providing material support, the program has instilled confidence and motivation in the children, encouraging them to overcome difficulties, excel in their studies, nurture their dreams, and strive for a better future.
This activity carries profound humanitarian significance, contributing to strengthening the bond between the military and the people, consolidating "the people's support," and helping to spread the positive image of the soldiers in green uniforms on the maritime border.
Helping underprivileged students get to school.
In a makeshift house of about 20 square meters located on the canal bank in Binh Dai commune, Vo Thi Thu Suong, a 9th-grade student at Binh Thang Secondary School, continues to study diligently so as not to disappoint the care and assistance of the officers and soldiers of Giao Long Port Border Guard Station.
Over the years, Suong has received support in the form of books, school supplies, a bicycle, and scholarships from the "Helping Children Go to School - Children Adopted by Border Guard Posts" program. In the 2025-2026 school year, she achieved the title of outstanding student.
With her father working as a laborer with an unstable job, her mother frequently ill, and no land for farming, Suong's family was in extremely difficult circumstances. During the summer months, Suong, along with her younger sister and grandmother, peeled cashew nuts for hire to earn extra money to support their family.
Ms. Vo Thi Nho, Suong's grandmother, said: "My daughter is sick, and our family is poor, so providing for her education is very difficult. For the past few years, thanks to the help of the border guards who provided scholarships, books, and bicycles, both of them have been able to go to school. Each month, they receive 500,000 VND to cover their study expenses. For many years in a row, both of them have achieved excellent academic results, and the family is very happy."
Another case is Nguyen Thai Bien, born in 2013, a 7th-grade student at Thua Duc Junior High School in Thoi Thuan commune. Due to his parents working far away and difficult economic circumstances, Bien lives with his elderly and frail grandmother.
From the sixth grade onwards, she was adopted as a "foster child" by the Giao Long Port Border Guard Station. At the unit, Bien was provided with accommodation, a place to study, and received direct guidance and care from the officers.
Lieutenant Vo Nguyen Duong, an officer at the Giao Long Port Border Guard Station, who was assigned to directly assist Bien, said: “At the unit, the child is provided with accommodation, a desk, and favorable living conditions. He comes to the station for lunch and rest, and sleeps there at night. On weekends and during the summer, he goes to his grandmother's house. When I have time, I take the opportunity to help him with his studies. In addition to adopting him, the unit also mobilized benefactors to build a 'Borderland Shelter' house for his grandmother to stabilize her life.”
Major Doan Van Vien, Deputy Political Officer of Giao Long Port Border Guard Station, shared: Currently, the unit is providing regular support to three disadvantaged students in the coastal border area. Each month, officers and soldiers allocate a portion of their income to support each student with 500,000 VND; at the same time, they mobilize social resources to provide scholarships, bicycles, and school supplies. From 2015 to 2025, the unit has supported 30 disadvantaged students with a total amount of nearly 150 million VND, along with many gifts, books, bicycles, and school supplies.
Spreading the positive image of the soldier in the green uniform.
The program not only helps children continue their education but also sows the seeds of beautiful dreams for the future. Huynh Van Phi, a 10th-grade student at Tran Truong Sinh High School, is one of the students who receives monthly support from the Co Chien Border Guard Station (located in Thanh Phong commune, Vinh Long province), funded by contributions from the unit's officers and soldiers.
Phi shared: “The soldiers' care not only helped me overcome material difficulties but also motivated me to strive in my studies. My dream is to become a border guard soldier to follow in the footsteps of previous generations in protecting our homeland.”

According to Major Do Minh Tuan, Political Officer of Co Chien Border Guard Station, from 2018 to the present, the unit has mobilized officers and soldiers to contribute a portion of their salaries and allowances to sponsor seven disadvantaged students in the coastal area.
At the Long Vinh Border Guard Post, Phan Hoang Quy, an 8th-grade student at Long Vinh Secondary School, is a special case as he is an orphan, having lost both his parents. Currently, Quy lives with his older brother, who works as a laborer, and their lives are fraught with difficulties.
Since 2024, I have been receiving support from the unit through the "Adopted Child of the Border Guard Post" model. In addition to ensuring adequate learning and living conditions, I receive support in the form of clothing, books, and other necessary items.
To date, Long Vinh Border Guard Station has sponsored 32 children with a monthly support of 500,000 VND per child, totaling 576 million VND. In addition, the unit regularly coordinates with families and schools to monitor academic progress and provide timely encouragement for the children to strive for success. Currently, three children have graduated from college or university and have stable jobs.
Colonel Mai Van Yen, Political Commissar of the Border Guard Command of Vinh Long province, said: The program "Helping Children Go to School - Children Adopted by Border Guard Posts" has provided educational opportunities for many students from disadvantaged backgrounds, helping them overcome difficulties and thrive in life. At the same time, the program contributes to strengthening military-civilian solidarity and reinforcing the people's trust in the border guard forces.
From 2016 to the present, the Border Guard of Vinh Long province has sponsored 68 students with particularly difficult circumstances in the coastal border area, providing support of 500,000 VND per child per month; the total support amounted to over 3.2 billion VND. The unit also awarded scholarships and school supplies worth over 1 billion VND.
Thanks to this support, two students have been admitted to university, three to college, and four to vocational colleges. Currently, border guard posts are fostering three male students, ensuring they have adequate living conditions, including food, accommodation, and education, and assigning officers to directly care for and educate them daily.
Currently, the Border Guard of Vinh Long province continues to support 47 students in the "Helping Children Go to School" program and three students under the "Adopted Children of Border Guard Posts" model.
According to the Vinh Long Provincial Border Guard Command, the "Helping Children Go to School - Children Adopted by Border Guard Posts" program has been implemented practically and effectively, closely adhering to the practical requirements of the area. This has contributed to strengthening the solidarity between the military and the people and promoting the combined strength in the cause of protecting maritime sovereignty.
Scholarships, bicycles, notebooks, and meals at border guard posts have become a great source of encouragement, helping many poor students continue their education. Through these simple yet responsible actions, the image of the green-uniformed soldier shines brighter in the hearts of the people, contributing to building a strong foundation of public support in the islands and seas of the Fatherland.
