TKV strives to protect the environment.

Việt NamViệt Nam09/10/2024

Recognizing environmental protection as a key task for sustainable development, the Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industry Group (TKV) has proactively implemented many decisive solutions and invested in environmental protection projects. Together with local authorities at all levels in Quang Ninh province, they have strived to minimize the environmental impacts of their production processes.

Replacing coal transport trucks with enclosed conveyor belts has helped improve the environment in residential areas and enhance the quality of life for residents.

Recognizing its responsibility and the importance of environmental protection, the Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industry Group (VNMC) has allocated approximately 1,000 billion VND annually to environmental protection efforts in recent years. The focus has been on greening mine waste dumps, investing in coal conveyor systems to replace truck transportation, and efficiently operating mine wastewater treatment plants and hazardous waste treatment facilities. To date, the total area planted with trees for environmental restoration in Quang Ninh has exceeded 1,500 hectares. It is projected that by 2025, the Group will green an additional 1,000 hectares, contributing to Quang Ninh province's accelerated transition from a "brown" to a "green" economic model.

Today, traveling along National Highway 18A, the barren, brown coal slag dumps of the past have been replaced by the refreshing green of tree-lined hills. The dusty roads used for coal transportation have also been replaced by enclosed conveyor belts, significantly contributing to environmental protection and improving the quality of life for the people.

Particularly focused on developing a circular economy, TKV has implemented the exploitation and recovery of mine waste rock to serve as backfill for construction projects in the province. The use of mine waste rock is linked to increasing greening in areas where waste dumping and mining have ceased.

Mr. Nguyen Viet Xoe, from Cam Trung ward (Cam Pha City), said: "Having lived in Cam Pha City for decades, I clearly feel the changes in the environment of a coal mining industrial area like Cam Pha. Previously, many people were hesitant to wear white clothes when going out because they quickly became dirty. But today, the waste dumps have been covered with greenery, the urban environment is clean, helping us residents improve our quality of life."

During the mining process, the Group continues to invest in technological innovation in production towards mechanization, automation, computerization, and the synchronization of high-capacity equipment in underground mining, contributing to reducing resource losses. The coal industry's efforts to protect the environment have contributed to minimizing the negative impacts of coal production on the environment, in conjunction with the local authorities at all levels in Quang Ninh province, contributing to achieving the goal of transforming the growth model from "brown" to "green" in Quang Ninh province.

Mr. Doan Duy Vinh, Head of the Environmental Protection Sub-Department (Department of Natural Resources and Environment), commented: "In recent years, the coal industry has effectively implemented environmental protection solutions in the area, clearly demonstrating its role and responsibility towards the rapid and sustainable development goals of Quang Ninh province. The coal industry's efforts in environmental protection have contributed to Quang Ninh ranking first in the Provincial Green Index (PGI) in 2023 with 26 points."

However, in the face of current climate change challenges, specifically the severe impacts of Typhoon No. 3 which caused thousands of hectares of trees in mine waste dumps to be uprooted, the Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industry Group is continuing to direct its units to proactively research and implement more appropriate solutions in production and environmental protection. This includes focusing on closely following and effectively implementing Resolution 10 of the Provincial Party Committee on "Strengthening the Party's leadership over resource management, environmental protection, disaster prevention and mitigation, climate change adaptation, and ensuring water security in the period 2022-2030".

Mr. Ngo Duy Tu, Deputy Director of TKV Environmental Company Limited, said: "To ensure the goal of sustainable environmental protection, in line with the challenges of current climate change, we have been proposing and advising TKV leaders on solutions to invest in environmental protection projects and convert green spaces appropriately in the coming period."

The achievements in environmental protection over the past period will serve as a foundation for the Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industry Group (TKV) to achieve sustainable development in the future, moving the coal mining industry towards a green economy as outlined in TKV's strategy.
