“Cybercrime is one of the most prevalent and costly threats in the world . Our latest Global Threat Overview report shows that malicious actors are beginning to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to carry out more sophisticated attacks,” said Derek Manky, Vice President of Cybersecurity Strategy and Global Threat Research at FortiGuard Labs.
Modern cybercrime transcends borders, domains, and even the traditional definition of crime. As attacks become increasingly sophisticated and interconnected, key findings from FortiGuard Labs' latest Global Threat Overview report reveal:
Speed of risk assessment as Time to Exploitation (TTE) decreases: As AI accelerates reconnaissance, weaponization, and execution, FortiGuard intelligence shows TTE decreasing to 24-48 hours for severe outbreaks, a sharp increase from previous reports suggesting this time was 4.76 days.

Ransomware victim numbers surge: FortiRecon team intelligence has identified 7,831 ransomware victims globally, a sharp increase from the approximately 1,600 victims identified in Fortinet's 2025 Report. The proliferation of cybercrime toolkits such as WormGPT, FraudGPT, and BruteForceAI contributed to this 389% year-over-year increase. The top three targeted sectors include manufacturing (1,284), business services (824), and retail (682). Geographically, the areas most targeted include the United States (3,381), Canada (374), and Germany (291).
The dispersion of identity information creates risks in the cloud: FortiCNAPP data confirms that throughout 2025, most confirmed cloud incidents stemmed from stolen, leaked, or misused login credentials, rather than infrastructure exploitation. Industry analysis shows hospitals/clinics and retail establishments are prime targets. The large number of users with unique identities, interconnected access patterns, and complex cloud integrations make these locations prime targets for malicious hackers.
According to FortiGuard Labs' 2026 Cyber Threat Forecast, the most capable cybercrime groups operate as “semi-automated” businesses, supported by undercover agents, access brokers, and botnet operators providing services on demand.
Key findings from the 2026 Global Threat Overview report reveal that stealth actors reduce operator skill requirements while accelerating workflows. With AI, criminals work smarter, with less effort. FortiGate IPS telemetry data shows a 22% year-on-year reduction in brute force attacks, demonstrating improved efficiency: with optimized and smarter attack techniques, threat actors are executing fewer attacks on more carefully selected targets, increasing the probability of success per verified login...
In response to this threat, Fortinet is committed to combating cybercrime by collecting and sharing threat intelligence and actively countering cyber threats on a global scale.
The 2026 Global Threat Overview report also highlights that encouraging the prevention of cybercrime has never been more important. To help security professionals stay ahead of cybercriminals, Fortinet and Crime Stoppers International have launched the Cybercrime Bounty program, providing a secure, anonymous channel for citizens and white-hat hackers to report cyber threats.
