On the afternoon of January 12th, after a 1-1 draw in the two regular halves of the Group B play-off match (Central Coastal Region qualifying round) of the 3rd Vietnam Youth and Student Football Tournament - 2025 THACO Cup, the two teams from Da Nang University of Sports and Physical Education and FPT Polytechnic College entered a tense penalty shootout.
To secure a 5-4 victory after six penalty shootouts, which earned the Da Nang University of Sports and Physical Education team the second spot (after Hue University) in the finals in Ho Chi Minh City, goalkeeper Phan Viet Cuong contributed by saving two penalty kicks fromFPT Polytechnic College players.
Goalkeeper Phan Viet Cuong made two spectacular saves, securing the victory for the Da Nang University of Sports and Physical Education team.
Notably, in those two saves, Phan Viet Cuong saved the opponent's sixth shot, contributing to the 5-4 victory amidst the suspenseful atmosphere of all the fans in the stadium.
This player, born in 2004, joined the youth team of Hue FC at the age of 12. At 18, Phan Viet Cuong left the Hue youth team because he wanted to pursue a career in the future. Cuong is currently a third-year student majoring in Sports Science at the Da Nang University of Sports and Physical Education.

Cuong also used to play for Hue U.19, so he was very confident standing in front of the ball from the penalty spot.
"To save those two penalties, during training, I practiced saving shots at the end of each session. I feel confident when saving penalties," said the player wearing jersey number 1 for the Da Nang University of Sports team. "Through training and experience since childhood, I've become more resilient than other students my age. I don't suffer from psychological issues, I have good judgment, and I'm completely confident…"
Having gained experience from an early age, goalkeeper Phan Viet Cuong has a confident playing style.
Making his debut in the Vietnam Youth and Student Football Tournament and scoring a goal for the team, goalkeeper Phan Viet Cuong said he was very happy that the team's hard training had paid off.
"The whole team played their hearts out to win the second spot in the finals. The team will definitely return to training with even greater determination. As for me, as a goalkeeper, I will try my best to contribute and help bring the best possible results to Da Nang University of Sports and Physical Education," said Phan Viet Cuong.

Thus, after a thrilling victory against FPT Polytechnic College team from the penalty shootout, the Da Nang University of Sports and Physical Education team officially secured the second ticket to the final round of the 3rd Vietnam Youth and Student Football Tournament – 2025 THACO Cup.
Earlier, Hue University team secured a place in the final round after a narrow 1-0 victory against Duy Tan University team. The only goal of the match was scored by Duong Huu Thai Hoang (number 10), who was also the top scorer in the qualifying round with 3 goals and the winner of the best player award.
