International Labor Day, celebrated on May 1st, has a rich and meaningful history. Originating from the powerful struggle of the working class in the United States at the end of the 19th century demanding the right to an 8-hour workday, May 1st has become a symbol of solidarity and the will to fight for the legitimate rights of workers worldwide . In Vietnam, the working class and laborers have affirmed their pivotal role, creating proud achievements in all fields.

In recent days, preparations for International Labor Day on May 1st have been bustling throughout the country. From factories and enterprises to agencies and units, enthusiasm and excitement can be seen everywhere. In industrial parks and export processing zones, many businesses are planning practical activities to show appreciation to their employees. Cultural and sports programs, gatherings, and social events are being organized, creating a healthy environment and strengthening solidarity and cohesion between employees and businesses.

Government agencies and trade unions nationwide have also carried out many practical activities leading up to International Labor Day. Conferences and seminars on labor policies, meetings to listen to the opinions of workers have been organized, promptly understanding their thoughts and aspirations, and resolving difficulties and obstacles in their lives and work.

In 2025, the celebration of International Labor Day on May 1st in Vietnam will take place amidst significant socio -economic changes. The government continues to promote policies supporting workers, especially in the context of economic recovery after the impact of the pandemic and challenges from the global situation. One of the notable highlights is the increasing attention to improving the quality of human resources and ensuring social security for workers.

Vocational training and skills enhancement programs are widely implemented, helping workers access better job opportunities and adapt to changes in the labor market. In addition, the implementation of labor laws and regulations, ensuring the legitimate rights and interests of workers, is also emphasized by all levels and sectors. Inspection and monitoring of labor law enforcement are strengthened to prevent violations of workers' rights.

Looking towards the future

Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan (a sanitation worker in Long Xuyen City) shared: “Our work is hard and sometimes goes unnoticed. But we understand that our work contributes to making the city cleaner and more beautiful. May 1st is an occasion for us to feel proud of what we are doing.”

Mr. Nguyen Van Tam (agricultural engineer) expressed: “I believe that the creativity and efforts of each worker contribute to the overall development of the agency, enterprise, and the country. May 1st is a motivation for us to continue contributing and developing ourselves.” The stories of Ms. Lan and Mr. Tam are proof of the sense of responsibility, dedication, and love for their profession of Vietnamese workers. They are the unsung heroes, contributing to the great achievements of their homeland and country.

In the context of globalization and the ongoing Fourth Industrial Revolution, the role of the Vietnamese working class and laborers is becoming increasingly important. To meet the new demands of the era, improving the quality of human resources and building a skilled workforce with high professional qualifications is an urgent task. The State and businesses need to continue implementing breakthrough policies, creating favorable conditions for workers to learn, improve their skills, and enhance their working conditions and living standards. At the same time, it is necessary to strengthen the protection of the legitimate rights and interests of workers, and build harmonious, stable, and progressive labor relations.

International Labor Day on May 1st is an occasion to reflect on the achievements made, an opportunity to ignite new enthusiasm, and create strong motivation for the Vietnamese working class and laborers to continue to play a pioneering role and contribute to the cause of building a prosperous and happy Vietnam.
