EnglishTottenham signed a four-year contract with Ange Postecoglou, making him the first Australian manager to work in the Premier League.
The London team accepted Postecoglou's one-year contract with Scottish club Celtic to bring him back to Tottenham Hotspur.
This will be the first official coach of the club after Antonio Conte - who was sacked in March. At the end of last season, Tottenham was led by two interim coaches Cristian Stellini and then Ryan Mason. They finished the Premier League in eighth place, which means they will not be able to attend the European Cup next season.
Tottenham targeted Postecoglou before, but had to wait for him to finish the season with Celtic. On June 3, Postecoglou helped Celtic beat Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Scottish Cup final to complete the treble of the Scottish Premiership, National Cup and Scottish League Cup.
Former Barca and Spain coach Luis Enrique was on the list of candidates for Tottenham. But the 53-year-old leader is said to want to wait for the opportunity to sign with Serie A champions Napoli, the team that just parted ways with coach Luciano Spalletti. Feyenoord coach Arne Slot and former Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann are also eyeing Tottenham. Currently, Nagelsmann is also the leading candidate for the position of PSG head coach, replacing Christophe Galtier.
Postecoglou does not have much training experience in Europe. In 2021, he left the Japanese club Yokohama F. Marinos to go to Celtic. There, he helped the club win the Scottish Premiership and League Cup double in both seasons. Previously, Postecoglou only coached domestic clubs such as Brisbane Roar or Melbourne Victory. The 57-year-old coach once led Australia to the 2014 World Cup and then won tickets to the 2018 World Cup before leaving after more than four years of work.
