The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has just issued a decision on the establishment of a working group to implement the project "Research on the construction of the Can Gio international transshipment port".

The working group consists of 15 members, headed by Mr. Tran Quang Lam, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport. The working group is tasked with coordinating with relevant departments and units to advise and propose to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee on the preparation and submission of the "Project for the Study and Construction of the Can Gio International Transshipment Port". Simultaneously, it will advise and propose to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee on directing the implementation of the project after it has been approved by the competent authority and perform other tasks as directed by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee.

Ho Chi Minh City expects the transshipment port to be a breakthrough economic boost for Can Gio's maritime sector.

According to the plan finalized by Ho Chi Minh City and the proposing unit, the Can Gio international transshipment port will be located in the Phu Loi islet area (Thanh An commune, Can Gio district). This islet has more than 93 hectares of protected forest, of which more than 82 hectares are forested land and are surrounded by the Thi Vai and Theu rivers. This area is located in the transition zone of the Can Gio mangrove biosphere reserve, so the project will not affect the core forest area.

The project involves approximately 7.2 km of port facilities, capable of receiving the world's largest container ships (24,000 TEU), with a throughput capacity of 10-15 million TEU, and a total estimated investment of approximately 6 billion USD. The project is divided into 7 investment phases, with construction of phase 1 beginning in 2024 and commissioning in 2027.

At a workshop on the project organized by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee last weekend, Vice Chairman Bui Xuan Cuong emphasized that the history of Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City's development over the past 300 years is closely linked to the development of seaports and maritime transport. Can Gio District, with its geographical location bordering the East Sea, situated between the two large river mouths of Soai Rap and Long Tau, and adjacent to the Thi Vai River, is an important maritime route for Group 4 seaports (South Central Vietnam seaport group), possessing all the conditions to develop a national gateway seaport and international transshipment hub.

The early implementation of container port construction in the period 2021-2030 is necessary to meet the current and future import and export needs of Ho Chi Minh City in particular, as well as the provinces in the southern key economic region in general.

Maritime and economic experts assess that developing the Can Gio international transshipment port into an international transshipment hub will be the driving force behind Can Gio's development into a leading port and logistics center in the country. The project not only aims to implement the policy of relocating the Saigon port out of the inner city but also to attract shipping lines, carriers, cargo owners, and logistics service businesses, soon transforming the Cai Mep estuary area into an international transshipment gateway, participating in the global transport supply chain.
