On November 16th, at the plenary session of the Mekong Connect 2023 forum, Mr. Vo Van Hoan, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, stated: Green growth and sustainable development are inevitable and irreversible requirements. At the same time, the new situation also necessitates self-reliance, resilience, and self-strengthening for each nation. This need demands that regions and localities throughout the country closely cooperate to leverage their collective strength.
"Ho Chi Minh City has signed agreements and developed plans to implement the socio-economic development cooperation program for the period up to 2025 with 38 provinces and cities nationwide. Therefore, the city recognizes the close regional linkage between provinces and cities in the task of developing the economy towards a green and sustainable economy," said the Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City.
Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City, Tran Viet Truong, stated that the National Assembly issued Resolution No. 45/2022/QH15 on January 11, 2022, on piloting some specific mechanisms and policies for the development of Can Tho City. Following that, on June 24, 2023, the National Assembly issued Resolution No. 98/2023/QH15 on piloting specific mechanisms and policies for the development of Ho Chi Minh City. Therefore, researching and exploiting the unique strengths and applying mechanisms and policies between the two centrally-governed cities has become essential to share experiences, overcome difficulties, find opportunities, and unleash potential. In particular, the project "Center for Linking, Producing, Processing, and Consuming Agricultural Products in the Mekong Delta Region in Can Tho City" (referred to as the Linking Center), which benefits from specific mechanisms and policies, is expected to create new growth momentum for both the region and Can Tho City.
Regarding the current state of linkages, production, processing, and consumption of agricultural products in the Mekong Delta region, the Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City stated that there are still difficulties in building and developing the transportation system. There is a shortage of quality plant seeds, a lack of technical and management capacity among farmers, and uneven investment in agricultural infrastructure. Processing and manufacturing of agricultural products is the weakest link. Consumption in the Mekong Delta region is facing difficulties in accessing consumer markets. There is a lack of policy mechanisms to attract large enterprises to invest in agricultural processing technology.
Therefore, the formation of highly professional value chains is essential to limit mismatches in supply and demand, overcome vulnerabilities, and prevent disruptions in the supply chain.
"The People's Committee of Can Tho City is very eager to cooperate with the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City to jointly apply special mechanisms, creating a favorable ecosystem for ideas that promote the unique strengths and special experiences of each locality, so that together we can maximize the potential of all resources, both internal and external," Mr. Truong said.
