How much does the Earth weigh in kilograms?

DNVN - You've probably heard that the Earth is huge, but how much does our planet actually weigh? The answer will leave anyone astonished.

Tạp chí Doanh NghiệpTạp chí Doanh Nghiệp17/04/2025

An almost unimaginable number.

The mass of the Earth is approximately 5,972 × 10²⁴ kilograms, or nearly 6 quadrillion kilograms. In full, this number is 5,972,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 kg – a number far too large for ordinary humans to comprehend intuitively.

Although Earth is only the third planet from the Sun, its mass is large enough to create the gravitational force that keeps the Moon orbiting it, keeps the atmosphere covering its surface, and keeps us "stuck" to the ground.

No one can place the Earth on a scale to measure its mass, but scientists have calculated the planet's mass using Newton's law of gravity. By observing the gravitational pull that the Earth exerts on objects (such as a falling apple or a satellite orbiting it), and especially the movement of the Moon, scientists have been able to deduce the Earth's mass with great accuracy.

A famous 18th-century experiment, known as the Cavendish experiment, helped determine the gravitational constant – key to calculating the Earth's mass.

Comparison with other planets

Despite its weight, Earth is not the heaviest planet in the solar system. For example, Jupiter – the largest planet – has a mass more than 317 times that of Earth. However, Earth is one of the few planets capable of sustaining life thanks to a perfect balance between its mass, distance from the Sun, and atmospheric composition.

Earth – the silent giant

The immense mass of the Earth is not just an impressive number, but also a determining factor in everything: from the Moon's orbit, climate, and weather, to the very existence of humankind. Every step you take, every object you hold, is being drawn by an invisible force from this "silent giant" called Earth.

Understanding the mass of our home planet is not just astronomical knowledge; it's also a reminder of the vastness and mystery of the universe – where we are just tiny specks of dust revolving around a brilliant sun in the boundless expanse of space.
