According to CNN , Victor Wong, a multimedia artist based in Hong Kong, has earned tens of thousands of dollars from ink paintings created by artificial intelligence, but has also faced considerable controversy.
Ink paintings created by artificial intelligence.
Wong is a creative artist with a degree in electrical engineering who has created numerous works in fields such as special effects for film, techno art installations, and sculpture.
He created "AI Gemini," an AI-controlled robot capable of painting traditional Chinese landscapes in ink wash. AI Gemini is unrelated to Google's AI chatbot of the same name.
3812 Gallery, which represents Wong, calls the Gemini AI " the world's first artificial intelligence ink painting artist".
The robot uses a robotic arm that was purchased online and reprogrammed, with a paintbrush attached.
The algorithm will analyze the data and control the robotic arm to draw the outlines of mountains to create a landscape painting on Tuyen paper - a traditional type of paper used for drawing.
Wong's artwork was once inspired by China's lunar exploration mission, using information from NASA's publicly available 3D lunar maps. He also used data such as stock prices, interpreting the ups and downs as mountains and valleys.
The color mixing is based on deep learning and is trained in the style of traditional ink painting. The amount of water used will vary depending on the air humidity. To complete a painting approximately one square meter in size, the Gemini AI takes about 8 to 10 hours.

Creating artwork using AI remains controversial.
Since launching AI Gemini, Wong has held exhibitions in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Taipei, and London.
He said his paintings have sold for around $20,000 to private collectors. Wong has also collaborated on several projects with businesses such as Cathay Pacific Airlines – an icon of Hong Kong.
The use of AI to create artwork remains controversial.
Earlier this year, more than 6,500 people signed an open letter urging Christie's New York auction house to cancel an auction dedicated solely to works created using technology.
Nevertheless, the auction went ahead and raised $729,000. Critics argued that AI-generated art lacked originality, and artists complained that it relied on copyrighted images.
For his part, Wong maintains that the paintings created by him and the Gemini AI are original, but also says that visitors to the exhibition sometimes exclaim, "This isn't art!"
