North Korea's military exercises are taking place as the US and South Korea prepare to conclude a similar operation called Ulchi Freedom Shield.

On August 31, North Korea's KCNA reported that Pyongyang conducted a command post exercise involving the entire military in response to ongoing exercises between South Korea and the United States. Leader Kim Jong-un visited the exercise command post of the General Staff of the Korean People's Army (KPA) on August 30.
This news agency It states: "The exercises aim to enable the commanding officers and staff of the entire army to be fully prepared for war and to acquire a strong military response capability by familiarizing them with the procedures of action when placed in a wartime situation."
Notably, in a separate retaliatory move, KCNA reported that the KPA had conducted tactical nuclear attack exercises simulating the destruction of key military bases and airfields in South Korea.
North Korea's state news agency said: "The missile unit launched two tactical ballistic missiles northeast from Pyongyang International Airport and accurately carried out its nuclear strike mission… The exercise was aimed at sending a clear message to the adversary."
Earlier, the South Korean military confirmed that the KPA had launched two short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) into the sea east of the Korean Peninsula, hours after the US deployed B-1B strategic bombers to participate in a joint air exercise with South Korea in the Yellow Sea. The US and South Korean forces are expected to conclude the Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) exercise on August 31st.
