North Korean media said the South Korean plane's mistaken bombing of a civilian home during a training exercise showed that a similar incident could trigger a new armed conflict on the Korean peninsula.
Two South Korean air force planes accidentally dropped eight air-to-ground bombs on a village near the border with North Korea last week, injuring 29 people in what the South Korean military said was likely pilot error. The area is near a regular US-South Korean training ground, Reuters reported.

"We do not need to explain what the situation would be like if the bombs were dropped further north and crossed our front line," the North's state news agency KCNA said.
"It is not at all an absurd inference... that an accidental spark could engulf the Korean peninsula and the world in a new armed conflict in response to the dangerous massive joint military exercises of the US and South Korea," KCNA said.
The South Korean and US militaries began their annual Freedom Shield exercise on March 10 and were scheduled to last until March 20, but the two sides suspended live-fire drills after a bomb was accidentally dropped on a civilian home.
"This incident is a proof that the various drills by the US and its allies targeting us are not for [ peace and stability in South Korea] as they claim, but are extremely dangerous and unpleasant acts that may trigger a potential crisis and the world's first nuclear war," KCNA stressed.
North Korea also warned it could take "merciless action" in response without notice for its rival's military activities.
North Korea regularly denounces joint US-South Korean military exercises, calling them a rehearsal for war against Pyongyang. South Korea denies the accusation, saying the exercises are purely defensive and aimed at maintaining readiness to respond to external threats.
