SK Hynix reported better-than-expected third-quarter results, with operating profit reaching 7.03 trillion won (US$5.08 billion) and revenue nearly doubling to 17.57 trillion won (US$12.7 billion).

The South Korean semiconductor company expects double-digit growth in demand for DRAM and NAND in 2025.

SK Hynix shares have risen 35% this year as the company widens its lead over Samsung and Micron in supplying high-bandwidth (HBM) chips used in Nvidia's AI products.

Nvidia plans to offer its high-end 12-layer HBM3E series in the fourth quarter.

According to analyst Greg Roh of Hyundai Motor Securities, SK Hynix's results demonstrate a focus on high-end products amid falling prices for older chip technologies.

"It proves the company has the technology and capabilities to focus on where it generates revenue," he said.

SK Hynix also benefits from the demand for enterprise solid-state drives (SSDs) used in data centers.

Samsung's rival says its capital expenditures this year will be higher than initially planned in order to keep up with the boom in AI hardware.

The company has announced several investment plans this year, including $3.87 billion to build a state-of-the-art packaging plant and an AI product research center in Indiana, USA.

In its home country, SK Hynix will spend $14.6 billion building a memory chip complex and making other investments, including the government- backed Yongin Semiconductor Cluster project.
