INVESTING BILLIONS IN GROWING PHALAENUM ORCHIDS

Da Huoai is a land with two hot and humid climate regimes intertwined between the climate of the South Central Highlands and the climate of the South Central Coast, suitable for fruit trees and industrial crops such as durian, green-skinned grapefruit, cashew and rice. But it was his boldness and daring to break through that made Mr. Nguyen Phu Son (57 years old, living in Di Linh town, Di Linh district) invest in building a Phalaenopsis orchid farm in the hottest climate area in Lam Dong province.

According to Mr. Son, he has been involved in the flower growing profession for more than 20 years, with species such as wild orchids, dancing orchids, anthuriums and ornamental leaves. Therefore, the name of his Phu Son Orchid Garden has long been famous throughout Di Linh district. Starting in 2020, Mr. Son switched to growing and trading phalaenopsis orchids with a scale of more than 2 hectares in Di Linh and Da Huoai districts. In particular, in Da Lay commune (Da Huoai district), there is an orchid breeding farm with an area of 1.2 hectares invested with a modern, closed scale according to high-tech processes. In Di Linh town, there is an orchid garden with a scale of about 1 hectare for him to take care of, display and introduce products when phalaenopsis orchids reach the age of sprouting, budding, blooming and selling to the market. Mr. Son shared: "With my existing agricultural knowledge, along with research, exploration, and field trips to successful Phalaenopsis orchid growing models in other localities, I decided to choose Da Lay commune to buy land to build a commercial orchid farm."

Thinking is doing, at the end of 2020, Mr. Nguyen Phu Son's family bought 1.5 hectares of land in Loc Hoa village (Da Lay commune, Da Huoai district) and invested billions of VND to build a greenhouse system; at the same time, installed an automatic temperature and lighting control system; purchased materials, equipment and recruited technicians and workers to grow Phalaenopsis orchids.

Mr. Son's orchid farm is divided into 4 gardens with a completely closed production process. Phalaenopsis orchids are placed on shelves for regular care to ensure they are of all ages, with the number fluctuating from 40,000 to 50,000 pots per year.

PERSISTENCE BRINGS SUCCESS

With his own diligence and hard work, the support of a team of technicians, and a system of modern machinery and technology, although grown in a hot climate, Mr. Son's Phalaenopsis orchid garden grows and develops well.

Mr. Huynh Thanh Quan - a technical staff of Phu Son orchid garden, said: "In the early days of planting, due to the hot climate in Da Lay commune, taking care of the seedlings was also difficult. However, when we mastered the technical process, biological characteristics of Phalaenopsis orchids and skillfully operated the automatic environmental balance system in the greenhouse, everything became easier". According to Mr. Quan, because the climate in Da Lay is quite harsh, the changes in temperature and light here are not suitable for Phalaenopsis orchids, so the technical staff discussed and advised the farm owner to install a sensor system, automatically adjusting the temperature and light. The system is installed with a program to automatically operate the ventilation fan, air conditioner, and roof when the temperature and light in the greenhouse change compared to the allowed index. Thanks to that, Phalaenopsis orchids are almost pest-free, growing and developing well.

Mr. Nguyen Phu Son shared: "During the process of planting and caring, we try to have orchids to sell regularly to the market. All Phalaenopsis orchid seedlings grown in Da Lay have thick stems and leaves. After the orchids are 10 months old, we transfer them to Di Linh to make flowers and sell them to markets across the country. With a quantity of 40,000 - 50,000 pots each year, we have signed contracts with many flower dealers in big cities such as Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and many provinces and cities across the country. The average price is 170,000 VND for each orchid plant with 1 - 3 stems sold to the market. For all seedlings, the current stem-producing rate is 100%, the rate of grade 1 stems is over 80%. After deducting expenses, the Phalaenopsis orchid farm brings my family a profit of 1.5 - 2 billion VND.

Not only enriching his family, Mr. Son's orchid farm in Da Lay commune is creating regular jobs for 10 local workers, with an income of 7 - 7.5 million VND/month/person.

Mr. Nguyen Minh Tanh - Chairman of the People's Committee of Da Lay Commune (Da Huoai District), said: "When Mr. Son proposed the idea of growing orchids locally, realizing that this was a promising economic model, from the beginning, the locality created the best possible conditions for the family to implement. Up to now, according to the assessment, Mr. Son's model of growing phalaenopsis orchids has been successful beyond expectations. This is a model with large, systematic investment and Mr. Son dared to think and act in investing in local economic development. The success of the model has opened up new prospects for building and replicating models that adapt to climate change, suitable to the actual situation, improving the efficiency of agricultural production in the locality".
