US President Donald Trump confirmed that the two crew members had been rescued safely, and said Washington would release a detailed report on the incident later in the day.
The New York Times previously quoted two sources familiar with the incident as saying it was not yet possible to determine whether the Apache was shot down by Iranian fire, experienced a technical malfunction, or faced some other problem.
According to the New York Times , Apache helicopters, along with fighter jets and drones, are being deployed by the US Central Command (CENTCOM) to break Iran's blockade of the strategic strait.
Apache helicopters typically only perform patrol duties, but have recently been ordered to penetrate deeper into Iranian airspace to demonstrate a more assertive posture by CENTCOM.
The report notes that this was the first Apache helicopter to crash since the conflict between the US and Iran erupted in February. Around the same time, Iran claimed to have shot down 30 US MQ-9 Reaper drones.
Earlier on Sunday, CENTCOM announced it had shot down two Iranian drones that threatened international shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend, and affirmed that the U.S. military remains "on high alert to continue defending against Iranian aggression."
Speaking to NBC on Saturday, President Trump asserted that the Iranian military had been "completely destroyed" by coordinated US-Israel airstrikes, leaving the Iranian regime with only 21% of its missile capabilities.
Nevertheless, the US still suffered significant losses in the conflict. Last April, CENTCOM announced that 13 US soldiers had been killed and 399 others wounded in Operation Epic Fury.
Also in April, Iran shot down a US Air Force F-15 Eagle, triggering an intense search and rescue operation before successfully rescuing the pilot and navigator. Additionally, in March, an friendly fire incident occurred when Kuwaiti air defenses shot down three US F-15s; fortunately, all six crew members managed to parachute to safety.
