After two months of fishing in the Spratly Islands, Mr. Pham Tien, owner of boat 95579 from Quang Ngai, said: "I've been making a living from squid fishing for a long time. In previous years, prices were low, and the crew's income was very little. This year, thanks to squid prices being almost double that of last year, we went out for more than two months, but each crew member earned over 100 million VND, and the boat owner earned over 1 billion VND. This year, the high squid prices have made the crew very happy."
Sharing the same view, Mr. Ho Van Lang, from My Tan village, Binh Son commune, captain of the fishing vessel 90317 TS, said: "On our last fishing trip, we only went out for 60 days but caught nearly 30 tons. This year, the weather was favorable, and the price of squid was high. After deducting expenses, each person earned 120-150 million VND. The high price of squid meant a good income, even though the trip was shorter."
To earn such a high income, fishermen must stay at sea for at least two months. Squid fishing starts around 4 PM the previous day and continues until 4 AM the following morning, working through the night. The work is very difficult and arduous.

"Earning over 100 million VND is not easy. Not everyone can do it. Some catch a lot, some catch little. This year, both prices and yields are high, so the income is much better. After docking, we're busy preparing for the next trip. We only manage about 3 trips a year," shared Mr. Nguyen Van Tha, a squid fisherman in Binh Son commune.
In Binh Son commune, there are 428 boats, including over 100 squid fishing boats, mainly operating in the Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands area. In recent days, numerous boats, after two months at sea, have begun to dock with their boats full of squid.
Mr. Nguyen Tien Phao, Deputy Head of the Economic Department of Binh Son commune, informed: "The first squid fishing trips of the fishermen this year have seen boats docked full of squid. On average, the yield reached 25 tons or more per trip on large boats over 16 meters. This year, the squid fishermen have had a good harvest and good prices. The average price of 310-317 thousand VND/kg is very high, so the fishermen are happy. High prices and high yields motivate fishermen to confidently stay at sea and protect the country in the future."

Despite favorable conditions, the fishermen of Binh Son and Van Tuong communes have long desired a designated fishing port to facilitate their access to shore, but this dream remains unfulfilled. Mr. Vo Quoc Nam, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Binh Son commune, stated: "For our locality, the Sa Can fishing port is included in the province's general plan, but the investment resources are beyond the capabilities of Binh Son commune. The commune requests that the province and relevant departments consider investing in the Sa Can fishing port in Binh Son to serve not only Binh Son commune but also neighboring communes like Van Tuong, ensuring safe mooring, shelter from storms, and the sale of fish after fishing in the area in the future."
In Sa Can (Binh Son commune), more than 400 boats and ships are anchored daily, with over 1,000 boats from other areas arriving during peak times. Because there is no fishing port, these vessels must anchor along the Tra Bong River when they come ashore, making management and ensuring their safety, especially during the rainy season, very difficult.
