A chain of 7 private practice hospitals nationwide.
Always pursuing its mission and vision of becoming one of the prestigious universities training in the health sector, where the knowledge and professional skills of its students are highly valued, Phan Chau Trinh University has built its own practical training hospital system before beginning its training programs.
Initially, there were only 4 Tam Tri General Hospitals in Da Nang , Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Dong Thap, with a total capacity of 750 beds. Along with the expansion of training and to meet the mandatory clinical practice and internship standards set by the School Council and Board of Directors, the school expanded its network of general hospitals by adding two more in Dong Thap. In 2024, the school will continue to operate another 300-bed hospital within the school campus, bringing the total number of hospitals in the Institute-School system to 7, with a total capacity of 1,400 beds, serving as a practical training facility in accordance with Government Decree 111/2017/ND-CP.
With this model, the school's training activities ensure that practice always goes hand in hand with theory, and the proportion of internships and practical training at hospitals accounts for 70% to 80% of the duration of each training program.
Medical students are doing their clinical practice at the university's teaching hospital.
How can we implement a truly effective and sustainable institute-university model?
First, the School Council, the Board of Directors, and the Hospital Management Board must be consistent in their philosophy of liberal education and training for change, as well as their strategic training goals, placing students at the center, prioritizing patients, and placing the profession paramount. From there, they can develop distinct graduation standards, and the training programs and methods must be improved to meet these output standards.
Notably, all teaching hospitals and the school are run by a single entity. This structure creates consistency throughout the school and hospital system, aiming to achieve the strategic goals of Phan Chau Trinh University's training program. The clinical instructor for students also serves as their theoretical instructor – a two-in-one system. Theoretical content is then translated into practical training, clinical practice, and patient care at the hospital.
Thanks to this, students at the university have early and easy access to the university-institute ecosystem. At the same time, it provides a good opportunity for students to apply their learned knowledge to practice in a synchronized and logical manner.
Gain practical experience at a hospital starting in your first year.
All students at the school receive practical training and experience in a hospital environment from their very first day of enrollment. This is the aspiration of every health science student. Early practical training in hospitals also helps students develop their five senses and, consequently, form the character of a doctor or healthcare worker with a high level of integrity and compassion.
Dr. Nguyen Huu Tung - President of the school, said: "From the very first day at school, students must be exposed to hospitals to understand the overall structure and work of the hospital staff. They must feel the pain of patients, hear the cries of newborns, recognize the smell of the hospital and the gentle gaze of nurses, and the hardships of doctors when dealing with difficult cases. They will experience long night shifts with their teachers, or hold and care for patients and see their happiness when doctors cure them. And from there, the character of a health science student will be formed over time, before their teachers allow them to directly receive patients for real practice."
He also added: For medical students, they must also learn and practice nursing skills thoroughly to fully understand the process of patient care. Therefore, the training program is structured by the school so that students can study this module in the first semester.
In addition, students here have many other advantages. They also have access to patient records, known as student medical records, which the school compiles specifically based on US student medical records. These student medical records are programmed for use in clinical practice throughout the entire course.
Medical Laboratory Technology students are collecting samples during their clinical internship at the university's teaching hospital.
The instructors involved in guiding internships and clinical practice are called CIs (Clinical Instructors). They are highly skilled doctors currently working at the PCTU Institute/University. The quality standard for clinical guidance is standardized at 1.5/1, meaning a CI is only allowed to guide a maximum of 5 students per hospital bed. The quality of clinical guidance is evaluated by the students, the CIs themselves, the CIs' professional management department, and the trusted independent EPA (Entrusted Professional Assessment) evaluation body.
Results from the university's Testing and Quality Assurance Center's survey have demonstrated that the PCTU Institute-School model and educational methods based on the university's philosophy yield positive results and students' professional skills exceed expectations. Early exposure to the hospital environment, consistency in training, internship experience from the first year, and uniformity in guidance and evaluation are the university's strengths. With the development of the Tam Tri General Hospital system and the on-site institute-school, and a commitment to meeting enrollment targets, this model is an ideal choice for training high-quality medical personnel for society.
