According to the salinity readings from stations in the province on the morning of February 19th: the salinity measured at Loc Thuan station (Cua Dai River) was 10.1‰; at Hung My station (Co Chien River) was 7‰; at Vam Cai Quao station (Ham Luong River) was 6.3‰; at Long Hoa station (Ba Lai River) was 1.5‰; and at Cho Lach station (Tien River) was 0.1‰.
According to forecasts, the 1‰ salinity boundary is likely to penetrate deepest on the Cua Dai River, reaching Giao Long commune (formerly Quoi Son commune), approximately 47.7km from the river mouth. On the Ham Luong River, it will penetrate to Tien Thuy commune (formerly Tien Thuy commune) - Phuoc My Trung commune (formerly Thanh Ngai - Phu My commune), approximately 60.3km from the river mouth. On the Co Chien River, it will penetrate to Hung Khanh Trung - Vinh Thanh commune (formerly Hung Khanh Trung B - Tan Thieng commune) - Quoi An commune (formerly Quoi An commune), approximately 60.8km from the river mouth. On the Hau River, it will penetrate to Tra On commune (formerly Tich Thien commune), approximately 61.1km from the river mouth.
The risk level for saltwater intrusion is at level 2. Saltwater intrusion can affect crops, livestock, drinking water sources, and infrastructure in areas where salinity reaches 0.5‰ or higher. Appropriate response plans should be developed based on the adaptability of the crops and livestock. Localities along the Ham Luong, Co Chien, and Hau rivers within 61km of the river mouth, and localities along the Cua Dai river within 47.7km of the river mouth, should monitor and check salinity levels when operating sluice gates and using river water directly.
